SALT LAKE CITY – Highlighted by a six-inning start for
Payton Riske, the Utah baseball team picked up its second straight shutout with a 1-0 blanking of Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
Â
Utah tallied 10 hits on Saturday while holding the Lopes scoreless on six hits, securing the team's third straight win overall. It is the first time since March 28 and 29, 2008, that the Utes have won back-to-back games via shutout. In that season, Utah won a pair of games vs. Air Force by a combined score of 25-0.
Â
Cal Miller had his third straight multi-hit performance with a 3-for-4 day and
Daniel Arambula added a 2-for-4 line.
Zakye Hawkins scored the game's lone run, coming home on a sac fly from
Luke Jacobs in the third inning.
Â
Riske delivered six innings of four-hit ball, striking out a pair of Lopes along the way and walking one.
Ryan Kittredge tossed the seventh and eighth innings before
Cameron Nielson closed out his second save of the season.
Â
Grand Canyon threatened in the fifth inning but the Utah defense stood tall. A sac bunt from the Lopes put runners on second and third, then a walk loaded the bases with just one out. Riske induced a ground ball to the left side as Arambula began a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the jam and get a roar out of the 1,359 fans in attendance.
Â
In the seventh, Kittredge was faced with the tying run at third with one out, but responded with a strikeout and ground ball to keep the 1-0 score intact. Then with a runner on in the eighth,
Cameron Gurney snared a line drive and then tagged first base for the inning-ending, unassisted double play.
Â
GCU put the tying run on base with one out in the ninth. Nielson picked up a strikeout as catcher
Derek Smith fired to second base with the runner moving, but batter's interference was called as the game came to a close.
Â
Jake Long singled in the game to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games as well as Long's on-base streak to nine consecutive contests.
