Mackenzie Wartenberger is in her fifth season as an assistant track and cross country coach.

Wartenberger has helped Utah make team appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2015 and 2016, Utah's first team appearances in school history. The Utes finished 20th at NCAA's in 2016, improving six spots from 2015's finish. In 2017, Grayson Murphy finished eighth at NCAA’s, the best-ever finish by a Utah runner. Utah has had five athletes earn eight all-region honors over the last three seasons, with Murphy earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2017. The Utes have been ranked as high as 17th over the past three seasons, their highest ranking in school history.

Wartenberger helped coach Murphy to five All-America honors. Murphy was a two-time first-team All-American in track in the 3,000 steeplechase, a two-time second-team All-American in the 5,000 in indoor and a 2017 All-American in cross country. Murphy set school records in the 3,000 steeplechase, outdoor and indoor 5,000 and outdoor 10,000. Wartenberger also helped coach Sarah Feeny to a school-record time in the indoor 3,000 and All-American indoor mile honors in 2019. Utah set a school record in the distance medley relay in 2016, winning the Drake Relays in the event that year. Utah has sent eight runners to the NCAA West Preliminary over the past three seasons.

Wartenberger comes to Utah from Radford University, where she spent two seasons as the head cross country coach and track assistant distance coach. In 2014 the women's cross country team finished third in the Big South Conference, their best finish since 1990, and had two all-conference performers. The men finished fourth for their best finish since 2007. In track, she helped Radford win six conference titles in women's distance races.

Wartenberger spent four seasons at UNC Charlotte (2009-13) as an assistant distance coach. Between the men's and women's distance squads, she coached three NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifiers, nine NCAA regional qualifiers, three USATF Championships qualifiers, and two Atlantic 10 Conference champions. Charlotte won 12 team conference titles in indoor and outdoor track.

Wartenberger (formerly Pierce) competed in track and cross country at California from 2005-09. She was the 2009 MPSF Champion in the 800. Wartenberger was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that that finished 18th at the 2007 NCAA Championships, and is part of the group that holds the school record in the event. In 2007 she advanced to the semifinals in the 800 at the USA Championships and was a two-time regional qualifier in the event. Wartenberger's career-best 800 time of 2:04.78 currently ranks sixth all-time at Cal.

Warternberger, who is originally from North Carolina, earned a bachelor of arts degree from California in peace and conflict studies in 2009. She is married to her husband, Marc.
