SALT LAKE CITY - Utah scored the first 12 points of the game and used a barrage of three-pointers to build a 29-point led at halftime, cruising to a 74-49 win over Idaho State on Tuesday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Four Utes scored in double figures, led by 13 points from Erin Gibbons, Lori Red and Kristi Rose. Red went 4-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range, and was one of three Utes to pick up a game-high seven boards. Rose also shot well, going 6-of-9 from the floor. Kristina Andersen and Lauren Beckman each hauled down seven boards, with Beckman also posting 11 points. Point guard Tiana Fuertes had seven points, seven assists and four steals in 30 minutes.
Theresa Mallak led Idaho State (2-8) with nine points and six rebounds.
Utah (8-2) made four of their first seven three-pointers, led by Red who rattled home two, to take a 34-7 lead in the first 18 minutes of the game. The Utes also outshot Idaho State 44.7 to 14.3 percent, had a 24 to 19 edge on the boards and made just one turnover in the first half.
The closest the Bengals came within the Utes in second half was 22 points (49-27) with 11:53 to play. As the bench cleared and every Ute that suited up played in the second half, Utah's shooting cooled off to 36 percent. However, Utah still outshot ISU 41.3 to 29 percent for the game. The Utes also made 15-of-18 free throws (85.0 percent), while Idaho attempted just nine from the stripe. Utah also ended up with a 44 to 37 advantage on the boards.
Ute head coach Elaine Elliott was pleased with her team's balanced offense. "Tonight was pretty much the same pattern our team has gotten into this year with a lot of people contributing," she said. "We don't have one go-to player, or two or three players who have to score every night. We have a lot of different people who can step up and score at any time, and that has really helped us this year."
"I was very pleased with our intensity and with the way we played in the first half," continued Elliott. "We played a lot of people in the second half, and because of that we weren't as crisp."
Utah will take off the next seven days and resume practice on Dec. 30 in preparation for its game at San Francisco at Jan. 2nd.
