FRESNO, Calif. - Utah shot 40 percent from three-point range and five players scored in double figures as the Utes blew out the Fresno State Bulldogs, 76-50, on Sunday afternoon at North Gym.
The win, improving Utah's record to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play, moved the Utes into a tie for second place in the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division with BYU and sets up a showdown with first-place New Mexico, 5-0 in WAC play, on Thursday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah made 6-of-11 trifectas in the first half and shot 8-for-20 from three-point range for the game. The Utes also shot 46.9 percent from the field. Fresno State managed to shoot just 33.8 percent from the floor and made just 2-of-19 three-pointers.
Freshman Erin Gibbons, who missed one game and did not start the last two with a groin pull, was back in the starting line-up on Sunday. Gibbons led the Utes with 15 points, making 4-of-10 three-point field goals. She also handed out four assists. Lauren Beckman had 13 points and two blocked shots. Kristina Andersen and Lori Red each scored 11 points. Andersen also led the U. with three blocked shots and eight rebounds. Tiana Fuertes had 10 points, making 2-of-3 three-pointers and had a game-high seven assists in 31 minutes. Kristi Rose added eight points.
The Utes outboarded Fresno State (7-11, 2-3 WAC) 41 to 39 and made just 15 turnovers compared to 21 for the Bulldogs, who pressed most of the game. Fresno State was led by Tiffany Lewis' double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
"We rebounded well and played good position defense," sized up Ute head coach Elaine Elliott. "Both teams shot the ball well early, but then they cooled off and we continued to pull away. I like the fact that we were so well balanced offensively. For us to almost have six kids in double figures in scoring is a testament to how balanced we are. The key to the game was not to let their athleticism show up on the boards or in the way of turnovers for us. We didn't have a problem with those things when it counted."
Fresno State led for the last time at 17-15 with 11:07 remaining in the first half. Utah then took over the game, exploding with a 21-3 run in the final 7:40 of the half to lead 41-23 at halftime.
The Utes started the second half much like they ended the first, outscoring FSU 14-5 in the first four-and-a -half minutes to take a 27-point lead (57-30). The Bulldogs never got closer than 20 points the rest of the way.
