DES MOINES, Iowa - Lindsay Sodja's career-high 22 points wasn't enough as Utah fell to Drake 70-62 in the first round of the Women's NIT on Thursday night at the Knapp Center.
Honorable mention A.P. All-American Tammi Blackstone scored 13 points in the second half and had 21 in the game while making 9-of-17 field goals to lead the Bulldogs, who improved to 19-9. Drake will move on to face Colorado in the tournament's second round. Utah finishes its season at 21-7.
Trailing 42-32 at halftime, Utah went on a 10-3 run in the first 1:38 of the second half. The Utes tied the game at 53-all on a three-pointer by Erin Gibbons with 9:46 to play. After Drake scored the next five points, the Utes scored the next six, taking its first lead of the half, 59-58, after two free throws by Kristina Andersen with 4:44 to play. The Bulldogs closed out the game strong however, making 9-of-10 free throws to help them outscore the Utes 12-3 down the stretch.
"I thought that Drake played extremely well in the first half, and we just had to wait for them to cool down," said Ute head coach Elaine Elliott. "We had some chances to score points in the last four minutes and just couldn't do so. We had to hit some shots, but we couldn't. We had some turnovers that kept us from converting. We don't have a go-to player who we could go to down the stretch. We battled back, and I was proud of that. We played well, not just good enough offensively."
Utah limited Drake to 25 percent field goal shooting in the second half and 40.7 percent shooting for the game. However, the Bulldogs had a 38 to 32 advantage on the boards, collected 11 steals and forced Utah into 21 turnovers.
The Utes shot 41.2 percent from the field and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three-point range. Gibbons came off the bench to score 14 points, making 4-of-7 three-pointers. Andersen had 11 points. Kristi Rose and Sodja each led Utah with six rebounds.
Freshman guard Kristin Santa had 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
