SALT LAKE CITY - Sophomore forward Lori Red scored a career-high 21 points 13 of which came in the second half as Utah used a great second half spurt to cruise past Kansas State, 76-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah, which led 31-26 at halftime, shot 61.5 percent from the floor to outscore Kansas State 45-32 in the second half. The Utes (3-1) also shot 46.2 percent from three-point range, connecting on 6-of-13 from behind the arc, and outrebounded the Wildcats 38-28 to win their third in a row over K-State (2-3).
Red, who sat out last season as a redshirt, showed everyone Saturday that she is all the way back, making 8-of-14 field goalsfour on breakaway layupsand going 2-for-4 from three-point range. Red also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes.
"It was nice to see her break out and have a game like that,"said Ute head coach Elaine Elliott on Red's performance. "She was rewarded for running the floor and rebounded well overall. Games like that can really help a player's confidence."
Two freshmen also scored in double figures for the Utes. Katherine McColl tossed in 16 and pulled down seven boards in 26 minutes off the bench. She also made 8-of-9 free throws, helping the U. shot 82.4 percent (14-for-17) from the line. Erin Gibbons had 15 points, connecting on 3-of-7 from behind the arc. "We got into some foul trouble in the second half and Katherine (McColl) came through for us and gave us some depth," said Elliott. "What Katherine brings is hard-nosed play. We needed that from her to give us a lift."
The Wildcats came within two points, 40-38, after a put back by Harris with 15:42 remaining in the second half. Utah then went on a 9-1 run over the next four minutes, capped off by a transition layup by Red off of a pass from Tiana Fuertes. The back breaker came when Gibbons made a lean-in, 15-foot jumper from the right baseline off of an inbounds play with three seconds on the shot clock to put the Utes in front 68-52 with 2:21 remaining.
"We hung in there in a physical game," said Elliott. "We played some zone after we got into foul trouble in the second half, and we forced them to take some face-up shots. They missed them, and we seemed to gain some energy then and were able to run a little and get some baskets in transition."
Lauren Beckman had eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench. Fuertes dished out a game-high eight assists.
Brandy Harris led Kansas State with 18 points and five rebounds. Angie Finkes had 15 points and nine boards. The Wildcats shot just 36.7 percent from the field and made 1-of-6 three-pointers.
Utah hosts No. 18 Colorado State next Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.
