SALT LAKE CITY - Utah allowed the fewest points and posted the third-largest win in school history with a 76-23 win over San Jose State on Thursday night in a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division match-up at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Six Utes scored in double figures, led by 12 points from Erin Gibbons. Kristina Andersen scored 11 points in just 14 minutes of play, making all four of her field goals, both of her three-pointers and her only field goal. Lori Red also scored 11 points and had a game-high seven rebounds. Lauren Beckman equaled Red with seven boards, and also had 10 points and a game-high four blocked shots. Lindsay Sodja had 10 points and went 2-for-3 form behind the arc. Kristi Rose contributed 10 points, making 5-of-6 field goals, and had three blocks. Amy Ewert got a career-high four blocked shots. Tiana Fuertes had a game-high six assists for the U.
Ayana Smith led San Jose State with eight points and four rebounds. The Spartans committed 19 turnovers in the game and shot just 20.8 percent from the field.
The Utes had 22 assists on 27 baskets, and shot 46.6 percent from the floor and 50.0 pecent (8-for-16) from three-point range. Utah also had a 44 to 31 edge on the boards and blocked 12 shots.
After spending nearly 24 hours getting back from their road trip to Hawaii on Sunday and Monday, an easy win was just what the Utes needed. Utah outscored the Spartans 19-2 in the first 10 minutes and held San Jose State (2-22, 0-11 WAC) to just eight points in the first half. Utah (19-4, 10-1 WAC) shot 14-for-28 from the field in the first half while SJSU made just 4-of-29 field goals.
"That was a get rid of the lingering effects of travel game," said Ute head coach Elaine Elliott. "I thought that we actually looked tired the first five minutes of the game, but we were pushing hard. I was pleased with the fact that we stayed disciplined and stayed within our system despite the fact that the game became a blowout early."
The Utes maintained their one-game lead for first place in the WAC Pacific Division over New Mexico. Utah goes for its 20th win of the season in its final home game on Saturday against Fresno State at 3:00 p.m.
