SALT LAKE CITY - It was just like old times in the Huntsman Center with the Utah women's basketball team romping to a 75-57 rout of Tallinn Estonia. The point guard was still making dazzling moves to the basket and a sharp shooter made life miserable for the visitors from three-point range.
But instead of former Ute greats Alli Bills and Julie Krommenhoek doing the damage, it was point guard Tiana Fuertes and redshirt sophomore Lori Red's turn. Fuertes, who played sparingly her first two years behind Bills, scored a team-high 16 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting. She also also dished off five assists and had two steals. Red hit for 10 points - seven in the first half - including two 3-pointers.
They were two of the more recognizable Utes. Fans kept a close eye on their rosters to get acquainted with five freshmen and four sophomores on the senior-less team. Ute coach Elaine Elliott played all 13 players on her roster, with most getting double digit minutes.
"This is only a two-and-a-half week old team," said Elliott, whose team trailed only once (2-0) in its season-opening exhibition game. "I'm very pleased at how they looked for two and a half weeks of practice. We have a long ways to go defensively, because we have so many young kids on the floor who haven't done any of this. But we had only nine turnovers, which is excellent, and we made the adjustments we needed to at the half."
Three players scored in double figures for the Utes: Fuertes (16), Red (10) and center Kristi Rose (10). Rose also had seven rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Lindsay Sodja pulled down a team-best nine boards.
Utah held Tallinn to 39 percent field goal shooting and Katrin Esko (25 points) was its only player to shoot 50 percent (9-17).
The Utes are off until November 14, when they play Bradley in Peoria, Ill.
