Salt Lake City - Utah opens its first practice of the 2000-2001 season Saturday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. Utah returns four starters and 11 of the 13 letterwinners from last year's team that went 23-8 overall. The 1999-2000 season marked the first-ever Utah women's basketball team to win both the regular-season title and the conference tournament championship. The Utes made their 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. It was the sixth consecutive year in which the U. won 20 games, claimed a conference championship of some form and earned a postseason bid. Elliott embarks on her 18th season as Utah's head coach with a 346-148 (.700) career record. Utah was selected by both the coaches and the media at the MWC Media Day to be the preseason favorite to win the inaugural Mountain West Conference championship.
Lauren Beckman, a 2000 second-team all-MWC selection, led the team last season in scoring (10.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). She started in all 31 games and ranked 26th in the nation in blocked shots (2.0 bpg). Kristina Anderson, another 2000 second-team all-MWC selection is back for her final season with Utah. Anderson started in 30 of the 31 games last season, where she was second in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game. Anderson was second on the team in rebounds, averaging 4.9 rebounds per game. Amy Ewert, Utah's best defensive threat is back for her senior season and will spend time between the forward and guard positions. Ewert started in all 31 games last season and posted 8.0 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game and 1.8 steals per game last season. She too received second-team all-MWC honors last year. Returning for the Utes is three-year letterwinner Lori Red-Castagnetto. Red-Castagnetto, a 5-11 senior from Provo, Utah, started in all 31 games and was fourth on the team, averaging 7.2 points per game.
Erin Gibbons, a 5-9 junior guard from Salmon Arm, B.C., ranked seventh in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage. Gibbons was fifth in scoring for the Utes, averaging 6.1 points per game. Katherine McColl was a big physical presence for the Utes last season. She added the extra depth and power Utah needed to contend with some of the bigger teams in the paint. Junior Lindsay Sodja-Boudreau returns at the forward position. Sodja-Boudreau played in 31 games, starting in one, and averaged 4.9 points per game for the Utes. Sodja-Boudreau grabbed 1.8 rebounds a game last season. Lindsay Herbert, a 5-11 junior saw action in 30 games and came on to be the most well-rounded player late in the season last year. Erin Hansen, a 6-3 forward is back after a shoulder injury which caused her to sit out most of last season. Sophomore Carley Marshall will return and is recovering from an ankle surgery she had over the summer. Marshall was the primary back-up at the five-spot last year and looks to have a full recovery in time for the 2000-2001 season. Sarah Wobbe served as a back-up to former Ute Tiana Fuertes last year and will look to fill the void at the point guard position. Whitney Sutak saw limited time at the wing position last year. Sutak has great speed and agility, and should see more minutes in 2000-2001.
Utah will have three newcomers on this year's team. The Utes inked Amy Bastman, a 6-0 guard from Gilbert, Ariz., Caroline Matthews, a 6-4 forward/center from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and Kelsy Stireman, a 5-7 guard from Ogden, Utah.
Utah's newcomers tallied many awards and accolades in their high school careers and look for continued success at the college level. Bastman was an honorable mention All-American and first-team all-east valley region selection in 1999-2000. Matthews was a member of an under 18 All-Australian Squad in 1999 and played for Victorian State Side in the Australian Championships. Stireman received 1999-2000 USA Today honorable-mention All-America honors and was a 1999-2000 Salt Lake Tribune all-state selection.
"The kids have returned in good shape and everyone is anxious to get on the court on Saturday," says Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "As always, it will take a lot of work and effort to maintain and improve upon our seasons of past, but that is our intention. We are looking forward to getting started."
