Salt Lake City - Just the Facts: The McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Champion University of Utah (23-7, 11-3 MWC) enters the NCAA tournament as the No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region and will face the No. 6-seed University of Illinois (22-10) in the first round at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, on Fri., Mar. 17. Utah is making its 10th NCAA appearance. The Utes made their last appearance in 1998 and stand 1-9 in NCAA tournament play. They claimed their only win over Iowa State (66-57) in Charlottesville, Va., in 1997.
Utah claimed the first-ever McLeodUSA MWC Tournament Championship by defeating in-state rival Brigham Young, 61-47, on Sat., Mar. 11, in Las Vegas, Nev. Utah defeated No. 5 UNLV 67-65, in the semifinals on Fri., Mar. 10. UNLV ended its season with a 17-12 overall record, 8-6 in the MWC. No. 1 Utah defeated No. 8 Air Force 65-29, in the quarterfinals on Wed., Mar. 8. Air Force ended its season with a 4-24 overall record, 1-13 in the MWC.
