Salt Lake City - COMING UP: No. 24 ranked Utah (15-2) hosts Wyoming (8-7) on Sat., Jan. 20, at 3:00 p.m.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The No. 24 ranked University of Utah women's basketball team is undefeated in Mountain West Conference play with victories over Colorado State UNLV, San Diego State and New Mexico. The Utes are currently on a four-game win streak. Utah defeated the Colorado State Rams, 73-51 at home on Thurs., Jan. 18. The Utes shut-down UNLV, 70-51, in Las Vegas, Nev. on Thurs., Jan. 11 and defeated San Diego State, 56-47, on Sat., Jan. 13 in San Diego, Calif.
Utah is currently 15-2 overall, 4-0 in MWC play. The Utes' 11-0 start was the second best since the 1997-98 season when the Utes opened their schedule with a 16-game win-streak.
The Utes are back in both polls this week. Utah is currently No. 24 in the Jan. 14 Associated Press poll with 106 votes. The Utes are ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Utah broke into the national rankings (25th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll) for the first time this season on Mon., Dec. 18.
Forward Lauren Beckman was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 15-19), marking the first award of her career.
SERIES SHORTS: Utah leads the series with Wyoming, 41-6. In their last meeting on Feb. 17, 2000, the Utes defeated the Cowgirls, 85-66, in Laramie, Wyo. Utah is 19-1 at home, 19-5 away and 3-0 at a neutral site vs. the Cowgirls.
INJURY REPORT: Sophomore guard Sarah Wobbe injured her left knee trying to catch a pass, as she got tangled with a Hawkeye defender in the Iowa game on Sun., Nov. 19. After undergoing an MRI on Nov. 27, it has been determined that Wobbe will be out for the rest of the season. She had ligament reconstruction surgery over the holiday break and will sit out the rest of the season to recover.
QUOTING ELLIOTT: On the upcoming Wyoming game: "Well, there will be no rest for the weary. It will be nice to be back at home, but we'll be right back at it with two more tough conference games."

COLORADO STATE GAME RECAP: The No. 24 ranked University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the Colorado State Rams, 73-51, in Mountain West Conference action on Thurs., Jan. 18 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Colorado State dropped to 12-3 overall, 1-1 in MWC play.
Utah led at the half, 39-24, with only four fouls called, all by Colorado State. Utah racked-up 30 points in the paint to CSU's eight. The Utes scored 21 points off turnovers to the Rams' nine points. Utah totaled 20 points from the bench and 15 second chance points. The Utes edged the Rams 42-31 on the boards and held the lead throughout the game.
For the Utes, junior Lauren Beckman tied a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Beckman recorded her sixth double-double of the season. She went 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Senior Kristina Andersen notched 16 points, seven boards and six assists, shooting 7-of-13 from the field, 1-of-3 from behind the arc and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line. Lori Red-Castagnetto added 11 points in the game. Utah went 27-of-59 (46 percent) from the field, 6-of-12 (50 percent) from three-point range and 77 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line.
Colorado State saw two players score in double-figures. Angie Gorton led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds. Gorton went 4-of-11 from the field, 2-of-6 from the 3-point line, 3-of-4 from the free-throw line and added six assists. Elizabeth English scored 12 points, making 4-of-7 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. The Rams shot 32 percent from the field (17-of-54), 35 percent from behind the arc (8-of-23) and 69 percent from the free-throw line (9-of-13).
"I was pleased with our players, they played tough and did some good things," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "It was nice to have a good start and we shot the ball much better. We've taken care of business in four conference games and we know that we'll have to keep coming back and playing tough." said Elliott.
SAN DIEGO STATE GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team is still undefeated in MWC play, making a second-half comeback and defeating the San Diego State Aztecs, 56-47, on Sat., Jan. 13 at Cox Arena in San Diego, Calif. San Diego State fell to 9-6 overall, 1-1 in MWC play.
Down at the break, 22-20, Utah managed to make a second-half comeback and win its third-straight Mountain West Conference match-up on the road. The Utes took advantage of points off turnovers, out-scoring the Aztecs, 15-6. Utah edged San Diego State 18-10, off points in the paint and notched 12 assists, 12 steals and three blocks.
Junior Lauren Beckman racked up a season high 19 points and tied a career-high 14 rebounds in a career-high 38 minutes of play to lead the Utes over the Aztecs. Beckman went 6-of-14 from the field, 7-of-8 from the free-throw line and added four assists, three steals and one block, respectively. Teammate Lindsay Herbert tallied 15 points, two blocks and two steals and freshman Kelsy Stireman posted 10 points. Herbert shot 5-of-10 from the field, 2-of-4 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Stireman went 3-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Utah went 17-of-46 (37 percent) from the field, 2-of-8 (25 percent) from 3-point range and 83 percent (20-of-24) from the free-throw line.
Claire Swinbank and Jamey Cox combined for 20 of the Aztecs 47 points. Swinbank shot 4-of-11 from the field and tallied seven rebounds, while Cox went 5-of-9 from the field. The Aztecs shot 41 percent (19-of-46) from the field, 14 percent (1-of-7) from the 3-point line and 62 percent (8-of-13) from the free-throw line.
"San Diego State is very much an improved team this season," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "This was such a physical game. Sometimes we wait and see what its going to take and we didn't have that to start the game. I give credit to San Diego State, they were very good defensively, physically, they were motivated and it was a very tough game. I think the difference was that Beckman's game was great. She rose to the occasion of the physical play and that was what we needed tonight," said Elliott.
UNLV GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team continued MWC play with a 70-51, win over UNLV on Thurs., Jan. 11, in Las Vegas, Nev. UNLV dropped to 10-3 overall, 0-1 in MWC play.
The first half saw both teams shoot poorly from the field. Utah was 7-of-29 and UNLV was 7-of-32 from the field before the break. The Utes regained composure in the second half and controlled the tempo for the rest of the game. UNLV took the lead only one time in the game. Utah edged the Rebels on the boards, 48-37 and racked up 14 assists, four blocks and three steals. The Utes outscored UNLV, 34-16 from points in the paint.
Utah saw two players score in double figures, with three others scoring nine points. Senior Amy Ewert racked up a season-high 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Ewert went 6-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. Lauren Beckman also scored double figures for the Utes. Beckman scored 12 points in 16 minutes of play and racked up eight rebounds. She was a perfect 3-of-3 >from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Katherine McColl recorded a career-high 11 rebounds, while teammate Kristina Andersen added nine boards. Erin Gibbons snapped a cold streak as she went 3-of-5 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line for nine points in 12 minutes of play. Utah went 23-of-55 (42 percent) from the field, 3-of-15 (20 percent) from the 3-point line and 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free-throw line.
For the Rebels, Constance Jinks tallied 20 points and seven rebounds. Jinks shot 8-of-18 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Linda Frohlich notched 11 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Frohlich went 3-of-12 from the field, 2-of-2 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. The Rebels shot 29 percent from the field (17-of-58), 22 percent from the 3-point line (2-of-9) and 71 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-21).
"This is a very talented Vegas team," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "We struggled the first half, but these kids really came through with a great energized effort. UNLV is so individually talented on the offensive end of the floor, player for player, position by position that we have in this conference. I feel really good about the effort that our kids gave defensively," said Elliott.
UTE FACTS: For the first-time in school history, Utah begins a season as the defending regular-season and conference tournament champions. The Utes return four starters and 11 letterwinners from a team which posted an 11-3 league record and a 23-8 overall mark. Utah, which led the nation in scoring defense and made its 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament a year ago, has won or shared a conference title each of the past five years.
Utah's 1999-2000 final RPI ranking, produced by the Jeff Sagrin Women's College Basketball Ratings, was 44th out of 316 teams. The Mountain West Conference was 9th out of 32 conferences.
NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS: As a team, Utah leads the nation in scoring defense, holding their opponents to an average of 51.4 points per game. The Utes are 1st nationally in field goal percentage defense (34.0), 13th in scoring margin (17.4) and 18th in rebound margin (6.4).
SCOUTING WYOMING: The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team has dropped two straight conference games. Wyoming lost on the road in Provo, Utah to Brigham Young, 78-57, on Thurs., Jan. 18. Sophomore Ann McColl was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls with 15 points along with five rebounds. Shelby Hoffman also chipped in 11 points. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls shot only 17-55 (.309) from the field and only 3-16 (.188) from the three point line, despite outrebounding the Cougars 41-38.
The Cowgirls lost in their conference opener, 76-51, to the Colorado State Rams, on Sat., Jan. 13, in Laramie, Wyo. Sophomore Darci Arsene had a career day with 12 points and career high 15 rebounds. Heather Shaffner also tossed in ten points in a season high 31 minutes of play. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls had a dismal day from the field, shooting only 28% (15-54), despite outrebounding the Rams, 41-33. The Cowgirls are currently 8-6 overall, 0-1 in MWC play.
Leading the Cowgirls is sophomore Ann McColl. McColl averages 12.4 points per game and 7.31 rebounds per game. Shelby Hoffman totals 11.5 points per game and 2.4 rebounds per game. Hoffman is 33-of-108 (.306) from behind the arc and 28-of-34 (.824) from the free-throw line. Teammate Jessica Gibbs posts 11.4 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg). As a team, Wyoming is 42 percent (344-829) from the field, 30 percent (70-232) from 3-point range and 70 percent (229-326) from the free-throw line. The Cowgirls average 70.5 points per game and 39.6 rebounds per game.
WYOMING HEAD COACH: Cindy Fisher is entering her third season as head basketball coach at the University of Wyoming. She was named head coach on March 27, 1998, and became just the fifth head basketball coach in Cowgirl history.
She recorded first career coaching victory on Nov. 18, 1998, as Wyoming defeated Denver, 60-56. Her first conference win came on Jan. 9, 1999, against WAC foe Tulsa, 76-63.
Prior to Wyoming, Fisher was an assistant coach at Old Dominion (Norfolk, Va.) for three seasons, one of the most successful women's collegiate basketball programs in America. While there, she was the recruiting coordinator, and recruited some of the top players in the United States and internationally, the scheduling coordinator, prepared scouting reports and was the public relations liaison for the Lady Monarchs. Former players coached by Fisher include Ticha Peniecheiro, Clarisse Machanguana, Mery Andrade and Nyree Roberts. She was also the offensive coordinator for three seasons, in which she helped coordinate an up-tempo transition style of basketball that ranked the Lady Monarchs in scoring offense, and had a large part in the development of the post players. During those three years at Old Dominion, the Lady Monarchs were 92-8, including a 34-win season and two 29-win years. During that time, they were runners-up to the national champion in 1997, and a Sweet Sixteen participant in 1996, 97 and 98. They also won the Colonial Athletic Association Conference Championship three years running.

Utah climbed into the Top 25 in both the USA Today/ESPN and Associated Press polls for the first time ever during the 1998-99 season. The Utes were ranked in the Top 25 in at least one of the two polls for 11 consecutive weeks.
HEAD COACH ELAINE ELLIOTT: The winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott has kept the winning tradition alive since earning the head coaching position in 1983-84. She has posted a 361-150 (.707) career record in 17 seasons. In the last 10 years alone, Elliott has guided the Utes to eight 20-win seasons, five 1st-place, three 2nd-place and two third-place finishes in conference play. Overall, Elliott has led the Utes to twelve 20-win seasons and three 19-win seasons, averaging 20 wins per season. Elliott was named the 1999-2000 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year and the 1999-2000 inaugural Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Elliott recorded her 350th career-win at home on Sat., Nov. 25 in the 66-33 victory over Weber State.
UTES ON THE RADIO/TV: Utah women's basketball is back on KALL 910-AM this season. KALL will carry 24 regular-season games and all postseason contests live. Clear Channel is in the third year of a four-year contract as the exclusive radio home of University of Utah sports.
Anchoring the broadcast team is KALL-910 AM Sports Director Brad Stone. Stone will broadcast the women's home games, while Kent Rupe will call the road games
As part of its agreement with the University of Utah, KJZZ-TV is scheduled to televise the Utah-BYU game on Jan. 27, live from the Huntsman Center. KJZZ is also tentatively scheduled to televise one of the Utes' games in the MWC Tournament.
Veteran sportscaster Steve Brown will call the Ute women's basketball games on KJZZ.
NATIONAL ATTENDANCE FIGURES: Utah ranks just out of the top 50 in the nation in home match attendance this week. In nine games at home, the Utes have brought in 7,411 fans, an average of 823 fans per game. Utah's 76-73 victory over New Mexico at The Pit on Sun., Jan. 7, in the conference opener ranks second in the nation with 16,845 fans.
THE 3RD WINNINGEST BASKETBALL SCHOOL THE PAST FIVE YEARS: When it comes to basketball, the University of Utah has established itself among the nation's elite in recent years. Combined, the Ute women's and men's programs went 248-64 the past five seasons for a .795 winning percentage, which ranks third-best in the country. Utah ranks behind Connecticut (.866) and Stanford (.796), and ahead of Duke (.787).
Utah's women and men swept the inaugural Mountain West Conference regular-season championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The women also won the Mountain West Tournament championship, while the men made it to the second round of the NCAAs before falling to eventual national champion Michigan State.
Under head coach Elaine Elliott, the Ute women went 111-35 the past five years, capturing five league regular-season titles and playing in four NCAA Tournaments and one NIT. The Ute men went 137-29 under head coach Rick Majerus from 1995-2000, winning the regular-season conference title and making it to the NCAA Tournament each season. Utah also made it to three Sweet 16s and was the national runner-up in 1998.
This season, the Ute women are 15-2 with wins over traditional national powers UCLA, Iowa, Montana, then-No. 14 ranked Oregon and Oregon State.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Utah, as a team is first in seven Mountain West Conference statistical categories. The Utes are second in two categories, third in three categories, fourth in two categories, fifth in three categories and sixth in two categories. Many Utes rank among the MWC statistical leaders in the individual categories.
BECKMAN NAMED MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Utah forward Lauren Beckman was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 15-19), marking the first award of her career.
A 6-2 junior from Elko, Nev. (Elko HS), Beckman sparked the Utes to a pair of conference road wins last week. In 16 minutes vs. UNLV on Thursday, Beckman was perfect from the field (3-3) and the free throw line (6-6) en route to a 12-point, eight-rebound performance as the Utes posted a 70-51 victory over the Rebels. She recorded her league-leading fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a 56-47 win at San Diego State on Saturday. A second team All-MWC performer last season, Beckman connected on 6-of-14 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws vs. the Aztecs. She also tallied a career-high four assists vs. SDSU. For the week, Beckman averaged 15.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. After three conference games this season, Beckman is fifth in league scoring (13.7 ppg) and second in league rebounding (10.7 rpg).
HERBERT NAMED MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Utah guard/forward Lindsay Herbert was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 18-22), marking the first time she has earned the award.
A 5-11 junior from Couer d'Alene, Idaho, Herbert led the Utes to their ninth straight win of the year tying a career high 19 points in a 63-48 win over then-No. 14 Oregon on Sat., Dec. 16. Herbert was 6-of-9 from the field, 1-of-2 from three point land and 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the Ute victory. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists vs. the Ducks. A starter in every game this season, Herbert is averaging 8.2 points per game and helps lead a Utah defense that ranks first in the NCAA for scoring defense (46.8).
UTAH VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Utah is 1-1 (.500) vs. ranked opponents this season. The Utes upset then No. 14 ranked Oregon, 63-58, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Sat., Dec. 16, and lost to the then No. 17 (USA Today/ESPN, No. 21 Associated Press) ranked Stanford Cardinal, 72-58, on Sat., Dec. 30.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The newest conference in the nation has quickly emerged as one of the best. The Mountain West Conference, which officially commenced operation on July 1, 1999, sent two basketball teams to NCAA post-season play and one team to the WNIT in its first year. League champion Utah and runner-up BYU made it to the NCAA First Round, while Colorado State made it to the WNIT Semifinals.

FACTS AND FIGURES: With a 23-8 overall record, Utah posted its sixth consecutive, and 18th overall, 20-win season. The Utes' .742 overall winning percentage equaled the tenth-best in school history. Utah equaled the eleventh-best conference winning percentage in school history last season (11-3, .786). Utah finished first in the MWC, marking its 26th consecutive upper-division finish in conference play. The 1999-2000 season marks the first-ever Utah women's basketball team to win both the regular-season title and the conference tournament championship. Utah won the regular-season title with an impressive 92-42 win at home over Air Force. The Utes ended their conference schedule with an 11-3 mark. Utah claimed the first-ever McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 61-47 win over BYU, in Las Vegas, Nev.
1999-2000 ACCOLADES: Regular-season and tournament champion Utah placed the most individuals on the all-conference list with three second-team selections in junior Lauren Beckman and seniors Kristina Andersen and Amy Ewert. After leading Utah to the inaugural regular-season title and its sixth consecutive 20-win season, Elaine Elliott was named 2000 Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. Tiana Fuertes was selected as the Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP and teammate Kristina Andersen was selected to the MWC All-Tourney team. Andersen, Beckman, Ewert, Caroline Matthews, Lori Red-Castagnetto, Lindsay Sodja-Boudreau and Janna Whitman earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference recognition. Andersen and Beckman were also named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes in 1999-2000.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING: Utah led the nation in scoring defense in 1999-2000, holding their opponents to an average of 52.2 points per game. Utah was fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (34.8%) and 3-point field goal percentage (40.1%). The Utes were 19th in scoring margin (13.0 margin) and 24th in 3-point field goals made per game (6.5 per game). Erin Gibbons was seventh in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage and Lauren Beckman was 26th in the nation in blocked shots (2.0 bpg).
UTES AND THE NCAAS: Utah made its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1999-00, and stand 1-10 in NCAA Tournament play. The Utes, seeded No. 11 in the Midwest Region, lost to Illinois, 73-58 in the first round at Ames, Iowa.
THE FANS: In 13 games at home, the Utes brought in 10,484 fans in 1999-00, an average of 806 fans per game. The Mountain West Conference as a whole ranks in 6th in the nation in attendance. In 115 total games or sessions, the MWC has brought in 257,276 fans.
