Denver, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced its preseason media poll and all-conference team at the MWC Basketball Media Day held at the Denver Marriott City Center.
For the first time in league history, Colorado State sits atop the preseason media poll after capturing nine of the 14 firstplace votes. The Rams finished second in the regular season a year ago, but captured the 2001 MWC Tournament title.Utah, defending MWC regular season champion, placed second in the poll with five first-place votes. BYU ranked third in the preseason media poll, followed by UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, San Diego State and Air Force.
UNLV senior forward Linda Fr?hlich earned Top Returning Player honors for the third straight year. Fr?hlich led the Mountain West in scoring and rebounding, and earned at least a share of MWC Player of the Year the past two years.
The only unanimous pick on the preseason media all-conference team, Fr?hlich was joined on the squad by Utah senior Lauren Beckman and three junior selections: BYU's Erin Thorn, Colorado State's Ashley Augspurger and New Mexico's Jordan Adams. The Top Newcomer award went to Wyoming junior Chassie Wiersma. A transfer from Oregon State, Wiersma started 50-of-57 games in two years for the Beavers, averaging 6.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game during her sophomore season.
