LAS VEGAS (AP) - Utah's 15-game winning streak, and a perfect record in conference play, seems to have it primed for a second straight Mountain West tournament title.
However, the 14th-ranked Utes (26-2), seeded No. 1 in the tournament for the second straight year, will need to get past intrastate rival Brigham Young on Friday to secure a place in the championship game.
Utah, 14-0 in conference play, struggled against Air Force in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday before prevailing for a 53-50 victory. Lindsey Herbert led all scorers with 21 points and Lauren Beckman added 20. No other Utah player scored more than four points.
The 15-game winning streak is the Utes' longest since a 16-game run to begin the 1997-98 season. They haven't lost since being upset 64-58 by Loyola Marymount on Jan. 2.
Utah opened last season's conference tourney with a 67-65 win over Nevada-Las Vegas and coasted to an easy victory over Air Force before beating BYU 61-47 in the championship game.
The Utes won both games over the Cougars this season, most recently a 67-55 triumph on Feb. 23. Utah leads the all-time series 47-24.
BYU (17-11), the fourth seed, moved into the semifinals with a 62-54 victory over UNLV on Wednesday, as Erin Thorn scored 13 points and Jennifer Leitner added 12 off the bench.
The Cougars rely heavily on Thorn, the team's only player scoring in double figures. Thorn averages 15.9 points, followed by guard Stacy Jensen at 9.6.
