Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team announced the signing of four prep recruits Monday. Head Coach Elaine Elliott received National Letters of Intent from Sharee Hendrix, Mandie Little, Lana Sitterud and Shona Thorburn.
Hendrix is a 5-10 guard from Highland High School in Salt Lake City. She averaged 19.3 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per game and 2.7 steals per game last season. Hendrix was a 2001 first team all-state member and a 2001 USA Today Top 200 selection.
"Sharee gives us a very explosive athletic component in our freshman class," said Elliott. "She will continue to improve her basketball skills and already has an explosiveness that is exciting."
Little, a junior college transfer from Ricks, is a six-foot post player. She was named to the 2001 all-conference first-team and was a 2000 Region 18 MVP. Little posted 15.4 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game in 2001.
"Mandie will provide us some depth in the post with the departure of Erin Hansen," said Elliott. "We're short on numbers and she will give us that safety net that allows us to have someone with some good experience already. She can help bulk up our post position."
Sitterud is a 5-10 guard from Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah. She averaged 16.7 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 5.9 steals per game last year, guiding Lone Peak to the state quarterfinals. Sitterud was a 2001 first-team all-state member, the 2001 Salt Lake Tribune MVP, the 2001 Deseret News Defensive Player of the Year and the 2001 Salt Lake Tribune Miss Basketball selection. Two years ago, she became the first sophomore to earn The Salt Lake Tribune's Most Valuable Player award after guiding the Knights to the Class 4-A state championship.
"I am thrilled the Lana is coming to play in our program," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "She is a great individual and has had an exceptional high school basketball career. She is, as we are, looking forward to seeing how far we can take her as a player in this program. It has been at times an interesting process, and Lana's decision to attend Utah is a rather courageous one. She is to be commended for seeing in us what we saw in her."
Thorburn, an Ontario, Canada native played at Westdale High School, and was a member and co-captain of the 2000 Canadian Women's Junior National Team. She will take part in a two-week Canadian Women's National Team Development camp this June. In high school, she averaged 18.2 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game and 5.0 steals per game. During her stint with the Canadian Women's Junior National Team, she posted 15.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game and 5.0 steals per game. Thorburn was a 1998 & 1999 OFSAA bronze medalist, and a 1997 OFSAA gold medalist for the Westdale Senior Girls Team. In 1998, she was a member of the Canadian Women's Youth National Team that participated in the World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia. Thorburn has attended the All-Canada Nike Camp since its inception in 1997.
"Shona is going to be one of the most exciting freshman that people have seen in a while," said Elliott. "She is very talented, very committed and really loves the game."
