Salt Lake City - The Utah women's basketball team will see some breathtaking sights as well as get a jump start on preparations for next season when the players and coaching staff take an 11-day tour through Europe. The team departs on August 2 and returns on August 13.
The Utes are expected to play five games overseas after tuning-up for the trip with a week of practice in Salt Lake City beginning July 26.
The Utes depart from Salt Lake City on August 2 and arrive in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 3. After playing two games against the Danish National Team in Copenhagen, the Utes will make their way to Malmo, Sweden on August 6 and will match-up with EOS Malbas in a game on August 7. The team will be in Varberg, Sweden, on August 8, for some sightseeing before facing the Hogsbo BBC team on August 9. The next three days the team will see the sights in Oslo, Norway, playing one or two games before returning home on August 13.
The Utah coaching staff is anxious for a glimpse of what to expect in the 2001-2002 season. Seniors Lauren Beckman, Lindsay Herbert, Katherine McColl and Erin Gibbons will be making the trip. Beckman, a 2001 honorable-mention all-American, led the Utes last season, avergaing 12.2 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Herbert, McColl and Gibbons played significant roles in Utah's first-ever NCAA "Sweet 16" Tournament appearance in 2001. Teammates Carley Marshall and Sarah Wobbe will get a chance to play with the team after sitting out last season as redshirts. Marshall went through two ankle surgeries and Wobbe had MCL surgery last season. Kelsy Stireman, Caroline Matthews and Amy Bastman will also be making the trip overseas.
Under NCAA rules, Division I basketball teams are allowed to make a foreign trip every fourth year. Members of the previous year's team--which excludes incoming student-athletes--are eligible to make the trip. The Utes last made a foreign trip in the summer of 1997.
