SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team will hold its first practice of the 2002-2003 season at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday, October 12. This season marks the 20th for Head Coach Elaine Elliott, who has never had a losing season and is the winningest coach in Utah basketball history with a 389-164 (.703) career record.
Utah returns just one starter, point guard Kelsy Stireman, from last year's squad that went 15-12. Back for her junior season. Stireman started in all 27 games last year, averaging 4.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and a team-high 3.6 assists.
Junior Carley Marshall also returns. After spending last season backing up All-American Lauren Beckman and averaging 18.4 minutes per game, Marshall will start this season at the post. Marshall averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds last year.
Junior Sarah Wobbe has battled with injuries throughout her career but is looking more physically solid. Wobbe, who played in 25 games last year, will compete for time at the point guard position.
Caroline Matthews, a 6-4 Aussie, is the only power forward returning for the Utes. Matthews played in 21 games last season, averaging 1.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest.
Lana Sitterud and Sharee Hendrix both return for their sophomore campaigns. Sitterud played in all 27 games last season and averaged 3.7 points and 1.5 rebounds in 14.7 minutes per game. Hendrix played in 22 games, averaging 2.7 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Utah has six newcomers on this year's team, including Mandie Little and Shona Thorburn, both of whom redshirted last season. Little will see time at the post, while Thorburn, a member of the Canadian National Team, will challenge for the starting spot at off guard.
Other newcomers include Kim Smith, another member of the Canadian National Team who is expected to start at small forward; Hanna Green, a transfer from the University of Hamburg in Germany; point guard Julie Wood, a two-time Salt Lake Tribune all-state selection; and Meghan Woster, a 2001-02 all-state honoree in South Dakota.
Utah plays the first of two exhibition games at 7:00 p.m on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Huntsman Center. The Utes open their regular season on the road at Texas Christian on Friday, Nov. 22.
