COMING UP:
The University of Utah women's basketball team will host the Northwest Sports Stars, a team of former collegiate players, for a 7:00 p.m. exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 14. This is the last of two exhibition games for the Utes.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
The Utes defeated Horsholm BBC, a team from the highest Danish women's league, 90-43 last Tuesday. The Utes shot 50 percent on the game and out-rebounded Horsholm 40-21. Utah was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and shot 52.6 percent from three-point range. Junior Mandie Little finished with a double-double - 13 points and 10 rebounds - and was one of four Utes to finish in double figures in scoring. Sophomore Shona Thorburn led all scorers with 20 points, followed by freshman Kim Smith with 17 and sophomore Lana Sitterud with 16. Thorburn also dished out five assists, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals. Smith added nine rebounds, while Sitterud pulled down four boards and had two blocked shots.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
The Stars fell 81-55 to the University of Cincinnati on Nov. 2. Cincinnati led 42-36 at the half, and scored 27 of the first 37 points in the second half. The Stars shot 52 percent, including four-of-eight from three-point range, in the first half. The second half was a different story. The Bearcats held the Stars to 8-of-34 shooting in the second half, and outscored them 39-19.
QUOTING ELLIOTT:
On the upcoming exhibition game - "This game gives us more opportunity for evaluation and teaching. We continue to be short in numbers. We will dress only nine as Julie Wood seems not to be seeing any measurable improvement with her leg (stress reaction). Caroline Matthews is out indefinitely with her shoulder (nerve and stability problems). Amy Bastman is out for the season with an ACL tear."
UP NEXT:
The Utes open regular-season play on the road against Texas Christian at 5:15 p.m. (CST) on Friday, Nov. 22, in Fort Worth, Texas. Utah opens its home schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 26, against Montana Tech. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m.
