COMING UP: The Utes will match-up with the San Diego State Aztecs on Thurs., Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in San Diego, Calif. On Sat., Mar. 2, Utah will play UNLV at 5:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, Nev.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The Utes are currently 13-11 overall, 6-6 in MWC play. Utah lost to in-state rival Brigham Young, 62-53 on Sat., Feb. 23 in Provo, Utah.
The Utes return three starters and nine letterwinners from a team which posted a perfect 14-0 league record and a 28-4 overall mark. Utah, which led the nation in scoring defense and made its 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament a year ago, has won or shared the conference title each of the past six years. The Utes add four newcomers to the roster this season.
Possible starters for the Utes in the match-up with SDSU and UNLV are: Erin Gibbons (Sr., G), Katherine McColl (Sr., F), Kelsy Stireman (So., G), Lindsay Herbert (Sr., G/F) and Lauren Beckman (Sr., F/C). Utah's 2000-01 final RPI ranking, produced by the NCAA, was 12th out of 316 teams. The Mountain West Conference was 7th out of 32 conferences.
UTES ON TV: Utah's game with UNLV on Sat., Mar. 2 at 3:30 p.m. (PST) will be televised (tape-delayed) locally on KTUD (UPN affiliate).
SERIES SHORTS: Utah leads the series with San Diego State, 14-10. The Utes defeated the Aztecs, 75-59 in the last meeting on Feb. 2, 2002 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 10-2 at home, 3-6 away and 1-2 at a neutral site vs. SDSU. Utah leads the series with UNLV, 11-9. In their last meeting on Jan. 31, 2002, the Utes lost to the Rebels, 79-71 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 7-2 at home, 3-6 away and 1-1 at a neutral site vs. UNLV.
QUOTING ELLIOTT: On the upcoming San Diego State and UNLV games- "Well, there will be no rest for the weary as we wrap up conference play. We are back on the road with two more tough conference games. Our challenge is finding that comfort zone. We have to keep perfecting things and keep improving in order to be successful."

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The San Diego State women's basketball team is currently 10-15 on the season, 2-10 in the MWC. The Aztecs lost to New Mexico, 63-53 on Sat., Feb. 23 in Albuquerque, N.M. and defeated the Air Force Falcons, 83-79 on Thurs., Feb. 21 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Claire Swinbank leads the Aztecs this season, averaging 12.0 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game. Swinbank is 121-307 from the field, 15-46 from behind the arc and 43-54 from the free-throw line. Teammate Atim Otii totals 9.8 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, while Jamey Cox posts 9.9 points per game. As a team, SDSU is 563-1442 from the field, 117-351 from three-point range and 252-388 from the charity stripe. The Aztecs average 59.8 points per game and 35.7 rebounds per game.
Barb Smith is in her fourth season as the women's basketball coach at San Diego State. Smith has a 39-68 career record.
SAN DIEGO STATE PROBABLE STARTERS: #10 Ashonda Williams (Jr., F), #24 Nicolette McCartny (So., C), #55 Atim Otii (Sr., F), #12 Claire Swinbank (Sr., G) and #20 Jamey Cox (Jr. G).
SCOUTING UNLV: The UNLV women's basketball team is currently 21-4 on the season, 9-3 in the MWC. The Rebles are currently on a four-game win streak. UNLV defeated the Air Force Falcons, 86-53 on Sat., Feb. 23 in Colorado Spring, Colo.
Linda Frohlich leads the Rebels this season, averaging 22.1 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Teammate Constance Jinks totals 16.9 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game, while Petra Glaser posts 9.8 points per game. As a team, UNLV is 681-1502 from the field, 107-328 from three-point range and 389-534 from the charity stripe. The Rebels average 74.3 points per game and 40.2 rebounds per game.
Regina Miller is in her third season as the women's basketball coach at UNLV. She posts a 53-33 record at UNLV and a 113-133 career record in nine seasons.
UNLV PROBABLE STARTERS: #13 Linda Frohlich (Sr., F), #54 Shery McCracklin (Fr., F/C), #55 Dishawn McCracklin (Jr., F), #11 Julia Gray (Jr., G) and #23 Constance Jinks (Jr., G).
HEAD COACH ELAINE ELLIOTT: The winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott has kept the winning tradition alive since earning the head coaching position in 1983-84. She has posted a 387-162 (.705) career record in 18 seasons. In the last 11 years alone, Elliott has guided the Utes to nine 20-win seasons, six 1st-place, three 2nd-place and two 3rd-place finishes in conference play. Overall, Elliott has led the Utes to thirteen 20-win seasons and three 19-win seasons, averaging 20 wins per season. Elliott was named the 1999-2000 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 2000-01 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 1999-2000 inaugural Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and the 2000-01 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Last season, Elliott led the Utes to a first-ever NCAA "Sweet 16" tournament appearance.
Most recently, Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
ELLIOTT APPROACHES 400TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott is approaching her 400th career win. Elliott needs 13 just more wins to gain her 400th career victory.
ELLIOTT NOTCHES 375TH CAREER WIN: Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team is second in the MWC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.296), field goal percentage defense (.358), 3-point field goal percentage (.365) and blocked shots (4.12). Utah is third in 3-point field goals made (6.58), free-throw percentage (.743), scoring defense (59.4), and is fourth in defensive rebounds (26.38), field goal percentage (.424), rebounding defense (36.2), scoring margin (+7.4) and assists (14.88). The Utes are fifth in rebounding offense (37.2), rebounding margin (+1.1) and assist/turnover ratio (0.91). Utah is sixth in scoring offense (66.8) and eighth in offensive rebounds (10.88), turnover margin (-1.08) and steals (6.83). Individually, six Utah players rank among the top 20 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 24 times.
LINDSAY HERBERT GAINS MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Utah senior guard/forward Lindsay Herbert was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, for the week of Feb. 11-15, marking her first award this season and second overall.
A native of Couer d'Alene, Idaho (Lake City HS), Herbert drained a career-high 7-of-9 three-pointers en route to a career-high 26 points in a near upset of No. 19 Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., last week. Herbert hit all seven of her treys in the second half, pulling the Utes to within three points late in the game. She shot 60 percent from the field (9-15) and grabbed five rebounds vs. the Rams. Herbert also helped the Utes to a 66-53 win at Wyoming by scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.
For the week, Herbert averaged 20.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. She also shot 58.3 percent (14-24) from the field and 62.5 (10-16) from three-point range.
ERIN GIBBONS GAINS MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Senior, Erin Gibbons was selected as the MWC Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 14-18, marking the first award of her career.
A native of Salmon Arm, B.C., Canada (Salmon Arm Secondary), Gibbons led Utah to a 1-1 record in league games last week. She played all 40 minutes of the 80-59 win over Wyoming, totaling 20 points, six assists and four rebounds. Gibbons also played every minute of a triple overtime loss to No. 23 Colorado State, 87-77, scoring a career-high 24 points and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds.
For the week, Gibbons was 16-of-34 from the field (47.1 percent) and 5-of-15 from three-point land (33.3 percent), while averaging a league-high (MWC games) 22 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
BECK BREAKING THROUGH: Lauren Beckman recorded her 1,000th career point on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Gopher Basketball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Beckman scored 22 points against Santa Clara in the season-opener for the Utes. Currently Beckman has racked up 1,334 career points. She became only one of seventeen other 1,000-point-plus scorers in Utah women's basketball history.
BECK BLOCKS WITH THE BEST OF THEM: Lauren Beckman became the Utah career leader in blocks during the 2000-01 season. She has amassed 221 total career blocks to date and has racked up 58 total blocks this season. Beckman recorded her 200th career block on Thurs., Jan. 31 in the match-up with UNLV.
GIBBIE IS GOLDEN: Erin Gibbons is approaching her 1,000th career point. Gibbons has 880 career points and needs 120 points to hit the mark. With three games left, the Mountain West Conference Tournament and a possible trip to the NCAAs, she may hit the mark.
HERBIE HITS FROM DOWNTOWN: Lindsay Herbert has been hitting the three-point shot 49 percent of the time this season. She leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage this season. In 24 games this season, Herbert has made 59-of-121 from behind the arc. She is 108-of-270 (40 percent) during her career at the U.
UTES CAN NAIL THE THREE: For the past few years, the Utes have had the hot hand from behind the arc. In 1999-2000, Utah was fourth in the nation 3-point field goal percentage (40.1%) and 24th in 3-point field goals made per game (6.5 per game). This year is no different. Utah currently shoots 36.5 percent (158-of-433) from three-point range and averages 6.6 treys per game.
UTE SPIKER JOINS BASKETBALL TEAM: Katrena Ellett, a 6-1 middle blocker on the Utah volleyball team has joined the ranks as the newest member of the women's basketball team. Ellett plays the forward position and is one of the few dual-sport athletes at the U. She saw time in her first college game on Thurs., Jan. 17 in a 67-39 win over the Air Force Falcons. Ellett totaled two points, one rebound and a steal in two minutes of play.
DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE: Utah basketball has always been known for its tenacious defense. In 2000-01, Utah led the nation in scoring defense, holding its opponents to an average of 51.1 points per game. The U. outscored its opponents by an average of 15.8 points a game, ranking seventh in the nation in scoring margin. Utah's defense was also superior in 1999-2000 as opponents were held to just 52.2 points per game. The Utes were 19th in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring its opponents by an average of 13.0 points per game.
This season, Utah has held its opponents to just 59.4 points per game and has outscored its opponents by 7.4 points a game. Opponents are shooting just .296 from three-point range and .358 from the field, when facing Utah.
GOPHER BASKETBALL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Senior Lauren Beckman was selected to the 2001 Gopher Basketball Classic All-Tournament team. On the weekend, Beckman racked up double-doubles both nights, 17 points 11 rebounds against Santa Clara, and 22 points 12 rebounds against Butler.
BRIGHAM YOUNG GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team dropped a conference match-up to the Brigham Young Cougars, 62-53 on Sat., Feb. 23 in Provo, Utah.
Utah gained a 33-31 lead going into the break, but managed to score just 20 points and shoot 15 percent in the second half and dropped a heartbreaker to the Cougars.
For the game, Utah's Lauren Beckman led the team with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Teammate Lindsay Herbert added 15 points, while Kelsy Stireman led the Utes with seven rebounds. As a team, Utah went 15-of-49 from the field, 5-of-17 from three-point range and 18-of-20 from the charity stripe. For the Cougars, senior Jennifer Leitner totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds. Stacy Jensen chipped in 14 points, four assists and two steals. BYU shot 21-of-55 from the field, 3-of-13 from behind the arc and 17-of-20 from the free-throw line. The Cougars out-rebounded the Utes, 39-30.
"Its a one point game and we take an open look three and don't hit it and then they (BYU) come down and make a three," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "We played hard and we played tough, we just couldn't pull out this win. We did a better job defensively in the second half, but you also have to score and we've struggled with that this season down the stretch. Our kids won't quit, they will continue to move forward and go down to the tournament and make something happen."
MWC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah, defending MWC regular season champion, placed second in the MWC preseason media poll with five first-place votes. Colorado State ranked first, BYU ranked third, followed by UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, San Diego State and Air Force. Utah senior Lauren Beckman was picked to the MWC preseason all-conference team.
UTES ON THE RADIO/TV: Utah women's basketball is back on KALL 910-AM this season. KALL will carry 20 regular-season games and all post-season contests live. Clear Channel is in the third year of a four-year contract as the exclusive radio home of University of Utah sports. Anchoring the broadcast team is KALL-910 AM Sports Director Brad Stone. Stone will broadcast the women's home games, while Kent Rupe will call the road games.
As part of its agreement with the University of Utah, KJZZ-TV televised the Utah-UCLA game on Dec. 1 and televised the Utah-BYU game on Jan. 26. KJZZ is also tentatively scheduled to televise one of the Utes' games in the MWC Tournament. Veteran sportscaster Steve Brown called the Ute women's basketball games on KJZZ.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The newest conference in the nation has quickly emerged as one of the best. The Mountain West Conference, which officially commenced operation on July 1, 1999, sent two basketball teams to NCAA post-season play and one team to the WNIT in its first year. The Mountain West Conference saw five out of the eight schools compete in either the NCAAs or the WNIT last season. League champion Utah made it to the NCAA "Sweet 16," Colorado State made it to the NCAA Second Round, while UNLV, New Mexico and BYU were all WNIT participants.
