COMING UP: On Feb. 7, the Utes will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., facing the Colorado State Rams at 6:30 p.m. On Sat., Feb. 9, Utah will take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 2:00 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo.
UTES ON TV: Utah's game with Colorado State on Thurs., Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. (MST) will be televised on Fox Sports Net. Jerry Schemmel will handle the play-by-play, while Sandy Williams will provide color commentary.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The Utes are currently 10-9 overall, 3-4 in MWC play. Utah ended a three-game losing streak with a 75-59 win over San Diego State on Sat., Feb. 2, in Salt Lake City. The win marked the seventh straight over the Aztecs. Previously, the Utes lost to the UNLV Rebels, 79-71 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Thurs., Jan. 31.
The Utes return three starters and nine letterwinners from a team which posted a perfect 14-0 league record and a 28-4 overall mark. Utah, which led the nation in scoring defense and made its 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament a year ago, has won or shared the conference title each of the past six years. The Utes add four newcomers to the roster this season.
Possible starters for the Utes in the match-up with Colorado State and Wyoming are: Erin Gibbons (Sr., G), Katherine McColl (Sr., F), Kelsy Stireman (So., G), Lindsay Herbert (Sr., G/F) and Lauren Beckman (Sr., F/C). Utah's 2000-01 final RPI ranking, produced by the NCAA, was 12th out of 316 teams. The Mountain West Conference was 7th out of 32 conferences.
SERIES SHORTS: Utah leads the series with Colorado State, 43-11. In their last meeting on Sat., Jan. 12, 2002, the Utes lost in triple overtime to the Rams, 87-77 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 24-4 at home, 18-6 away and 1-1 at a neutral site vs. Colorado State. Utah leads the series with Wyoming, 44-6. The Utes defeated the Cowgirls, 80-59 in their last meeting on Thurs., Jan. 10 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 21-1 at home, 20-5 away and 3-0 at a neutral site vs. Wyoming.
QUOTING ELLIOTT: On the upcoming Colorado State and Wyoming games- "Well, there will be no rest for the weary as we continue conference play. We'll be right back at it on the road with two more tough conference games. Our challenge is finding that comfort zone. On Sat., Feb. 23, Utah will face Brigham Young in Provo, Utah at 4:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the San Diego State Aztecs on Thurs., Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in San Diego, Calif. On Sat., Mar. 2, Utah will play UNLV at 5:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes will participate in the MWC Tournament on Mar. 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nev.
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE: The Colorado State University women's basketball team is currently 17-4 on the season, 6-1 in MWC play. Most recently, CSU defeated the Air Force Falcons, 63-55 on Sat., Feb. 2, in Colorado Springs, Colo. On Thurs., Jan. 31, the Rams lost to New Mexico, 56-50, at the Pit in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rams have three players averaging in double-figures this season. Angie Gorton leads the team, totaling 13.9 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. Ashley Augspurger averages 13.4 points per game and 5.9 boards per game, while Elizabeth English posts 13.0 points per game. English went down with a leg injury early this season and will sit out the rest of the year. As a team, CSU is 516-1191 from the field, 144-423 from three-point range and 358-484 from the charity stripe. The Rams average 73.0 points per game and 38.2 rebounds per game.
Tom Collen begins his fifth season as the women's basketball coach at Colorado State University. He has a 115-28 career record at CSU.
COLORADO STATE PROBABLE STARTERS: #00 Ashley Augspurger (So., F), #11 Jasai Ferrucho (So., G), #14 Angie Gorton (Jr., G), #24 Jackie Campbell (Jr., G/F) and #50 Shannon Strecker (Jr., C).
SCOUTING WYOMING: The University of Wyoming women's basketball team is currently 10-9 overall, 3-4 in the MWC. Most recently, the Cowgirls lost to the Lobos of New Mexico, 56-41 on Sat., Feb. 2 in Albuquerque, N.M. Previously on Thurs., Jan. 31, Wyoming defeated the Air Force Falcons, 70-66 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Cowgirls have three starters averaging in double-figures this season. Carrie Bacon totals 14.0 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. Ann McColl averages 12.1 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, while Darci Arsene posts 11.9 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. As a team, Wyoming is 461-1156 from the field, 72-276 from behind the arc and 317-422 from the free-throw line. The Cowgirls average 69.3 points per game and 40.3 rebounds per game.
Cindy Fisher is entering her fourth season as head basketball coach at the University of Wyoming. She has a 33-59 career record at Wyoming.
WYOMING PROBABLE STARTERS: #12 Carly Stucky (So., G), #21 Darci Arsene (Jr., F), #25 Cherrith Wiersma (Jr., G), #41 Carrie Bacon (Jr., F) and #51 Ann McColl (Jr., C).
HEAD COACH ELAINE ELLIOTT: The winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott has kept the winning tradition alive since earning the head coaching position in 1983-84. She has posted a 384-160 (.706) career record in 18 seasons. In the last 11 years alone, Elliott has guided the Utes to nine 20-win seasons, six 1st-place, three 2nd-place and two 3rd-place finishes in conference play. Overall, Elliott has led the Utes to thirteen 20-win seasons and three 19-win seasons, averaging 20 wins per season. Elliott was named the 1999-2000 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 2000-01 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 1999-2000 inaugural Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and the 2000-01 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Last season, Elliott led the Utes to a first-ever NCAA "Sweet 16" tournament appearance.
Most recently, Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
ELLIOTT APPROACHES 400TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott is approaching her 400th career win. Elliott needs 16 more wins and with seven games left, the Mountain West Conference Tournament and a possible trip to the NCAAs, she could hit the mark.
ELLIOTT NOTCHES 375TH CAREER WIN: Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team leads the MWC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.289) and is second in field goal percentage defense (.430), 3-point field goal percentage (.363) and blocked shots (4.05). Utah is third in defensive rebounds (27.11), 3-point field goals made (6.37), rebounding margin (+2.6) and is fourth in scoring margin (+8.0) and scoring defense (68.1). The Utes are fourth in rebounding offense (38.7), assists (15.42), field goal percentage (.430), rebounding defense (36.1) and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (0.94). Utah is fifth in scoring offense (68.1) and sixth in offensive rebounds (11.58). Utah is seventh in free-throw percentage (.727), and eighth in turnover margin (-1.58) and steals (6.21). Individually, six Utah players rank among the top 20 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 23 times.
ERIN GIBBONS GAINS MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Senior, Erin Gibbons was selected as the MWC Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 14-18, marking the first award of her career.
A native of Salmon Arm, B.C., Canada (Salmon Arm Secondary), Gibbons led Utah to a 1-1 record in league games last week. She played all 40 minutes of the 80-59 win over Wyoming, totaling 20 points, six assists and four rebounds. Gibbons also played every minute of a triple overtime loss to No. 23 Colorado State, 87-77, scoring a career-high 24 points and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds.
For the week, Gibbons was 16-of-34 from the field (47.1 percent) and 5-of-15 from three-point land (33.3 percent), while averaging a league-high (MWC games) 22 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
BECK BREAKING THROUGH: Lauren Beckman recorded her 1,000th career point on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Gopher Basketball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Beckman scored 22 points against Santa Clara in the season-opener for the Utes. Currently Beckman has racked up 1,275 career points. She became only one of seventeen other 1,000-point-plus scorers in Utah women's basketball history.
BECK BLOCKS WITH THE BEST OF THEM: Lauren Beckman became the Utah career leader in blocks during the 2000-01 season. She has amassed 204 total career blocks to date and has racked up 41 total blocks this season. Beckman recorded her 200th career block on Thurs., Jan. 31 in the match-up with UNLV.
GIBBIE IS GOLDEN: Erin Gibbons is approaching her 1,000th career point. Gibbons has 836 career points and needs 164 points to hit the mark. With seven games left, the Mountain West Conference Tournament and a possible trip to the NCAAs, she could very well hit the mark.
HERBIE HITS FROM DOWNTOWN: Lindsay Herbert has been hitting the three-point shot 46 percent of the time this season. In 19 games this season, Herbert has made 39-of-84 from behind the arc. She is 92-of-240 (38 percent) during her career at the U.
UTES CAN NAIL THE THREE: For the past few years, the Utes have had the hot hand from behind the arc. In 1999-2000, Utah was fourth in the nation 3-point field goal percentage (40.1%) and 24th in 3-point field goals made per game (6.5 per game). This year is no different. Utah currently shoots 36.3 percent (121-of-333) from three-point range and averages 6.4 treys per game.
UTE SPIKER JOINS BASKETBALL TEAM: Katrena Ellett, a 6-1 middle blocker on the Utah volleyball team has joined the ranks as the newest member of the women's basketball team. Ellett plays the forward position and is one of the few dual-sport athletes at the U. She saw time in her first college game on Thurs., Jan. 17 in a 67-39 win over the Air Force Falcons. Ellett totaled two points, one rebound and a steal in two minutes of play.
DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE: Utah basketball has always been known for its tenacious defense. In 2000-01, Utah led the nation in scoring defense, holding its opponents to an average of 51.1 points per game. The U. outscored its opponents by an average of 15.8 points a game, ranking seventh in the nation in scoring margin. Utah's defense was also superior in 1999-2000 as opponents were held to just 52.2 points per game. The Utes were 19th in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring its opponents by an average of 13.0 points per game.
This season, Utah has held its opponents to just 60.1 points per game and has outscored its opponents by 8.0 points a game. Opponents are shooting just .289 from three-point range and .358 from the field, when facing Utah.
GOPHER BASKETBALL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Senior Lauren Beckman was selected to the 2001 Gopher Basketball Classic All-Tournament team. On the weekend, Beckman racked up double-doubles both nights, 17 points 11 rebounds against Santa Clara, and 22 points 12 rebounds against Butler.
SAN DIEGO STATE GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 75-59 win over San Diego State on Sat., Feb. 2, in Salt Lake City. The win marked the seventh straight over the Aztecs. Utah improves to 10-9 overall, 3-4 in MWC play. The Aztecs move to 9-11 overall, 1-6 in the MWC.
Utah's bench made the difference in the game, racking up 38 points to San Diego State's seven. Sophomore Carley Marshall had a career night, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, 2-of-6 from behind the arc and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Marshall totaled 19 points and nine boards on the night.
For the game, senior Lindsay Herbert also totaled double-figures with 16 points. Herbert went 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Seniors Erin Gibbons and Lauren Beckman picked up eight points a piece and teammate Lana Sitterud added seven points in the game. Head coach Elaine Elliott cleared the bench at the two minute mark and all twelve players saw time in the game. As a team, the Utes went 23-of-51 from the field, 9-of-21 from three-point range, 20-of-24 from the free-throw line and out-rebounded the Aztecs, 40-33.
For San Diego State, Claire Swinbank posted 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Teammate Tanisha Knight added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jamey Cox and Atim Otii added eight points each. The Aztecs shot 38 percent (25-of-66) from the field, 42 percent (5-of-12) from behind the arc and 57 percent (4-of-7) from the charity stripe.
"This win feels good and it brings us back to where we were," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "It helps our morale and our confidence level. Our bench was huge for us tonight. Sharee (Hendrix) came off the bench and grabbed some boards for us. She's been providing some extra rebounding and we need that to continue. Carley (Marshall) had a career night and really stepped it up. I am proud of the kids for playing tough and am happy for the win."
UNLV GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team lost to the UNLV Rebels, 79-71 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Thurs., Jan. 31.
Utah played a very physical game in both the first and second half. The Rebels managed a steady lead throughout the first half, but the Utes came back to close the gap to two points (36-34) before going into the break. Both teams shot well in the first half, with Utah making 13-of-29 from the field and UNLV making 13-of-24 from the field.
In the second half, both teams battled for baskets and Utah came back to take the lead, 52-49, with 10:53 left in the game. The Utes continued to lead until UNLV's Constance Jinks stole the ball with 1:57 left and converted a field goal, putting the Rebels up by two. Utah tied the game with 1:25 left on a six-footer by Erin Gibbons, but UNLV's Erin Johansson hit a three-pointer, regaining the lead for the Rebels, 72-69 with 1:06 left. Utah made a costly mistake down the stretch and turned the ball over with just :36 seconds to go in the game. The Rebels managed to convert seven free-throws in the final seconds of play to edge the Utes, 79-71.
On the night, Utah had three players score in double figures. Senior Lauren Beckman racked up 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Teammate Erin Gibbons totaled 14 points, a career-high eight assists and two steals. Sophomore Carley Marshall came off the bench to score 10 points and three rebounds, three assists and two steals. As a team, the Utes went 28-of-54 from the field, 4-of-17 from three-point range and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
For the Rebels, Linda Frohlich led all scorers with 26 points, nine boards and four assists. Frohlich went 8-of-13 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Teammates Petra Glaser and Constance Jinks also scored in double figures for the Rebels. Glaser totaled 13 points, while Jinks managed 10 points. UNLV shot 52 percent (26-of-50) from the field, 46 percent (5-of-11) from the behind the arc and 67 percent (22-of-33) from the free-throw line. The Rebels out-rebounded Utah, 33-23.
"It will be tough to get over this loss," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "There were bright spots in the game for us, we had kids that wanted to compete and we were in this game until the last few minutes when we had some costly turnovers. Our bench gave us a lift and I thought our starters could carry us down the stretch, but that is not the way it happened."
MWC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah, defending MWC regular season champion, placed second in the MWC preseason media poll with five first-place votes. Colorado State ranked first, BYU ranked third, followed by UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, San Diego State and Air Force. Utah senior Lauren Beckman was picked to the MWC preseason all-conference team.
UTES ON THE RADIO/TV: Utah women's basketball is back on KALL 910-AM this season. KALL will carry 20 regular-season games and all post-season contests live. Clear Channel is in the third year of a four-year contract as the exclusive radio home of University of Utah sports. Anchoring the broadcast team is KALL-910 AM Sports Director Brad Stone. Stone will broadcast the women's home games, while Kent Rupe will call the road games.
As part of its agreement with the University of Utah, KJZZ-TV televised the Utah-UCLA game on Dec. 1 and televised the Utah-BYU game on Jan. 26. KJZZ is also tentatively scheduled to televise one of the Utes' games in the MWC Tournament. Veteran sportscaster Steve Brown will call the Ute women's basketball games on KJZZ.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The newest conference in the nation has quickly emerged as one of the best. The Mountain West Conference, which officially commenced operation on July 1, 1999, sent two basketball teams to NCAA post-season play and one team to the WNIT in its first year. The Mountain West Conference saw five out of the eight schools compete in either the NCAAs or the WNIT last season. League champion Utah made it to the NCAA "Sweet 16," Colorado State made it to the NCAA Second Round, while UNLV, New Mexico and BYU were all WNIT participants.
