Laramie, Wyo. -- The Wyoming Cowgirls Basketball Team (10-11 overall, 3-6 in the MWC) fell to the Utah Utes (11-10, 4-5 in the MWC) by the final of 66-53, on Saturday afternoon, in Laramie.
After Utah hit the first basket of the game, the Cowgirls would rally back with a 15-2 run to take the 11-point lead. But, the Utes would fight right back scoring 11 unanswered to tie the game at 15 all. The game stayed close for the remainder of the half with five lead changes and four ties, but a basket by guard Ashley Elliott with a minute left in the half would allow the Cowgirls to take a 25-23 score into halftime.
The Utes seemed to be the team that came out fired up in the second half, as they would open up with a 14-3 scoring run to gain a 37-28 lead. The Cowgirls would fight back and at the 12-minute mark a basket by Darci Arsene would close the margin to two points, but that's as close as they would get in the half and the game. Over the next ten minutes, the Utes would build a double-digit lead, which included their largest of 15 points, and go on to defeat the Cowgirls by the final of 66-53.
Junior Carrie Bacon led the Cowgirls and all scorers with 21 points, along with four rebounds for the game. With a team leading eight rebounds, Darci Arsene also chipped in 12 points. As a team, the Cowgirls struggled shooting only 35% (20-58) from the field and committing 19 turnovers, despite outrebounding Utah 40-29.
Utah was led by center Lauren Beckman, who finished with 17 points and ten rebounds. Two other Utes finished with double-figures, including guard Lindsey Stireman, who finished with a season high 15 points. The Utes finished the night shooting 48% (27-56) from the field.
"The one thing that is important to remember is that the Utah's and BYU's of the world have dominated the Cowgirls and until you get a win over one it's hard to believe that you can, and that's what we're still struggling with," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "I thought we played outstanding in the first half and coming out in the second half we started to doubt ourselves. When you start to doubt, your confidence wavers and you don't shoot the ball as well. This game really came down to seven shots, they hit seven shots that we didn't. But, if we hit a couple of shots to keep it close at home then we have a chance, but we just struggled shooting the ball in the second half."
The Cowgirls will hit the road next week, as they take on San Diego State, on Thursday night, at 8:30 p.m., MST and UNLV, on Saturday night, at 8:35 p.m., MST.
