LAS VEGAS - Thirteen three-pointers made all the difference as Utah defeated UNLV, 69-65, Saturday night in the Lady Rebels' final game of the regular season at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Utah senior Lindsay Herbert scored 24 of her game-high 32 points from beyond the arc. In a game opening 11-2 run by the Utes, Herbert drained two 3-pointers from downtown. Freshman Lana Sitterud also went on a long distance scoring rhythm going 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line for nine points.
UNLV took its first lead of the game at the 9:22 minute mark on a two-point basket by senior All-America candidate Linda Fr?hlich. From there on out, the Lady Rebels would hold the lead only twice. Utah, however, would lead by as much as 14 points.
Down 38-31 at the half, UNLV built up its momentum and started to make a comeback. A steal by Fr?hlich with 2:50 remaining in regulation led to an easy layup on the fastbreak to get UNLV back within two points.
UNLV's Kinesha Davis hit a jumper from the right side, two of her seven points of the night, to tie the game at 62-62. With 56 seconds left, Davis was fouled by Sitterud and sunk 1-of-2 free throws to give the Lady Rebels a one-point lead.
Again, a 3-pointer by Herbert put Utah back in front and all UNLV could do was let the time expire. The Utes improve to 15-11 overall, 8-6 MWC, while the Lady Rebels go to 21-6 overall, 9-5 MWC.
Both teams split the regular season series and will most likely match up with each other again as the No. 4 and No. 5 seed next week in the Mountain West Conference Tournament on March 6-9 in Las Vegas.
