SALT LAKE CITY - Kim Smith, who will join the Utah women's basketball team this fall, earned honorable mention on the Womenscollegehoops.com Top 21 Freshmen of Impact team. She was one of 18 players listed in addition to the top 21 players. Smith is the second Utah recruit in the last two years to be recognized by Womenscollegehoops.com. Shona Thorburn, a 5-10 guard who redshirted during her first season with the Utes in 2001-02, was named to the top 20 a year ago.
Smith, a 6-0 guard/forward, was named the British Colombia Player of the Year last season, averaging 22.2 points, 4.5 assists and 2.6 steals per game. She led Heritage Park to an undefeated record the last two seasons and was honored as the MVP of the Provincial Tournament both years.
Smith has been named to the Canadian Junior National Team in 2001 and 2002, and is in the running to make the Senior National Team this fall. This summer before she joins the Utes, Smith will play with the Canadian team in the American Tournament for Young Women in Riberao Preto, Sao Pablo, Brazil, July 17-21.
"I think Kim's selection this year, coupled with Shona's last year, indicates the caliber of first year player we have in our program for the 2002-03 season," said Ute head coach Elaine Elliott. "Kim will have extensive international playing experience before she gets to Utah. She has strong leadership skills and will be an anchor throughout her career."
