The University of Utah women's basketball team (11-3, 1-0) hosts Colorado State (9-6, 0-1) in a Mountain West Conference game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Head Coach Elaine Elliott became just the 38th Division I women's basketball coach to win 400 games with a 63-47 victory over Wyoming last night at the Huntsman Center. In its first Mountain West Conference game of the season, Utah held the Cowgirls to just 37 percent from the floor and out-rebounded them 38-30.
Sophomore Shona Thorburn led Utah with 19 points, four assists, four rebounds and two blocks. Despite an off night offensively, junior Mandie Little grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. Junior Carley Marshall finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, freshman Kim Smith added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block. She also limited three-time all-MWC player Carrie Bacon to just five points.
On the season, three Utes average double figures scoring, led by Smith with 17.1 points per game. Thorburn adds 15.5, followed by Marshall with 10.3. Smith also averages a team-high 6.9 rebounds, while Thorburn is tops with a 3.1 assists per game average. As a team, Utah is outscoring opponents by an average of 17.6 points a game.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Colorado State opened Mountain West Conference play with a 71-56 loss at BYU Thursday afternoon. The Rams were led by senior center Shannon Strecker with 14 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Ashley Augspurger also scored in double figures with 10 points. Both senior guard Elizabeth English and freshman guard Vanessa Espinoza tallied five assists, while Augspurger had the only block of the game for CSU. BYU used several large scoring runs to take a 20-point lead at halftime and the lead would never get below double digits the entire second half.
Colorado State is led on the season by Augspurger, who averages 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. Strecker adds 10.1 points, while Lisa Narkiewicz averages a team-high 5.5 rebounds. The Rams are out-rebounded by opponents by just over two a game, but are outscoring opponents 66.9 to 61.4.
