COMING UP:
The University of Utah women's basketball team (13-3, 3-0) faces San Diego State (6-8, 0-2) at 5:05 p.m. (PST) on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cox Arena in San Diego, Calif.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Utah remained perfect in Mountain West Conference play with a 56-49 win over UNLV on Thursday night. It was both the Utes' fifth straight win and fifth game in a row they have held an opponent to 50 points or less.
Though they committed 21 turnovers, the Utes capitalized more so on the 17 of the Lady Rebels, converting them into 20 Utah points. Utah shot 40 percent on the game, while UNLV went 18-of-59 (31.5 percent) from the field on the game.
Freshman Kim Smith finished the game with 20 points, 15 of which came from three-point range. She also added five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior Carley Marshall finished with a double-double - 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also added three blocks. Sophomore Shona Thorburn dished out a team-high six assists to go along with six points, three rebounds and one steal, while Stireman totaled six points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
San Diego State remained winless in its young MWC season, falling to Brigham Young 61-46 Thursday at Cox Arena. The Cougars opened the game with a 6-0 run before Aztec freshman Veronica Shaw made a jumper to put SDSU on the scoreboard. San Diego State's only lead in the game came at the 13:13 mark of the first half, when the Aztecs led 7-6 after a Shaw lay-up. Shaw ended the contest with a team-high 14 points.
Later in the first half, BYU pulled ahead by five points, 11-16, before freshman Aztec Amber Fouse made a lay-up, then forced a turnover and got fouled. Fouse converted both of her free throws to bring SDSU to within a point of the Cougars, 15-16, with just under five minutes remaining in the half. BYU's Ambrosia Anderson buried three jumpers in the Cougar's final four possessions of the first half to put Brigham Young up by nine, 26-17, at the half.
Cougar Erin Thorn scored first for BYU at the start of the second half, draining a three-pointer to enlarge BYU's lead to 12 points. The Cougars went up by as many as 24 points before Aztec senior Jamey Cox made five consecutive free throws to spark a 15-0 SDSU scoring run. San Diego State pulled to within nine points, 44-53 at the 4:16 mark, but could not overtake BYU, which posted a MWC season-high 12 blocks.
SERIES SHORTS:
* Utah leads the series with the Aztecs 15-10. The Utes are 10-2 at home, 4-6 away and 1-2 at a neutral site vs. San Diego State. In their last meeting on Feb. 28, 2002, in San Diego, Utah won 47-45.
