OGDEN, Utah - The University of Utah women's basketball team fell to 8-3 on the season with a 70-59 loss to Weber State at the Dee Events Center in Ogden tonight. It was just the Utes' fifth loss ever to the Wildcats.
Utah shot just under 36 percent on the game, while the Wildcats were 22-of-49 (45 percent) from the field, including 8-of-14 (57 percent) from behind the arc. The Utes forced 15 Weber State turnovers, but were out-rebounded 39-32 on the game.
In the first half, both teams started out slow, but Utah led 7-4 after going on a 5-0 run. Weber State answered with an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Utah tied the game at 13 with 7:50 left in the half. Utah built a four-point lead after a three-pointer by freshman Kim Smith with 4:00 on the clock, but Weber State would score on its next two possessions to tie the game at 21. There was no score for the last 3:14 of the first half.
The Utes shot just over 33 percent on the half, while Weber State was 9-of-29 (31 percent) from the field. Though both teams committed eight turnovers, Utah was out-rebounded 24-16. Smith, who hit two shots as the shot clock expired, finished with 10 points on the half.
The second half started out close, but after the Utes turned the ball over on a shot clock violation Weber State pulled ahead and never looked back, at one point going on a 19-6 run to take a 13-point lead. The Utes then went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to five (35-40). Utah eventually cut it to three (39-42), but the Wildcats caught fire from three-point range, dropping treys on three consecutive trips down the court to build a 10-point lead and seal the win. The Wildcats were 7-of-8 from three-point range in the second half.
Smith finished with 27 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead Utah. She was the only Ute to finish in double figures scoring. Junior Mandie Little pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
"You have to credit them offensively," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "They hit shots and got the ball to their post player or outside to their shooters who buried threes. I'm not disappointed with our effort defensively, our problem is on the offensive end of the court on the glass."
