SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team, unanimously picked to win the Mountain West Conference, will hold its first practice of the 2003-2004 season from 9 a.m.-noon this Saturday, Oct. 18.
Utah, which is ranked as high as No. 13 nationally in the preseason polls, returns all five starters from last year's squad that ran away with the MWC regular-season crown and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Utes will be led by sophomore Kim Smith, the reigning MWC Player of the Year and the preseason pick for this year's Top Player. Smith is one of 35 players and just three sophomores to be named as a preseason candidate for the Wade Trophy, given to the nation's top player.
Also returning is sophomore Shona Thorburn, a second-team all-MWC pick last year and one of five players in the league named to the preseason all-conference team. Seniors Carley Marshall, Kelsy Stireman and Mandie Little round out the group of starters that return for the Utes.
This season marks the 21st for Head Coach Elaine Elliott, who has never had a losing season and is the winningest coach in Utah basketball history with a 413-171 (.707) career record.
Utah plays the first of two exhibition games against Utah Valley State College at 3 p.m on Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Huntsman Center. On Nov. 12, the Utes host Northwest Sports at 7 p.m.
The Utes open their regular season at home in the Preseason WNIT when they host Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
