SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 19/20 Utah women's basketball team defeated Weber State 51-38 this afternoon in the Huntsman Center. With the win, the Utes improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-7.
Utah shot 41 percent from the field on the game and held Weber State to just 33 percent. The Utes also out-rebounded the Wildcats 34-30. However, Utah committed a season-high 20 turnovers in the victory and was 0-for-10 from three-point range.
"This was not a pretty game - there were lots of turnovers," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "Weber State is very physical, they don't back down. They got after us physically more than any team we've faced all year, but we found a way to get the win. You have to credit them, but we were definitely not in sync offensively today."
Senior Mandie Little had her first double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Kelsy Stireman scored a season-high 15 points. She also added a career-high seven steals and grabbed four rebounds. Junior Lana Sitterud dished out five assists and nabbed four steals on the game.
For just the second time in her career, sophomore All-America Kim Smith was held under 10 points. She finished with five, but pulled down eight rebounds.
After a close start, the Utes went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-point (19-8) lead. However, the Wildcats then outscored Utah 9-3 to close out the half, and the Utes went into the locker room up 22-17. Utah shot 41 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 36 percent of Weber State. The Utes out-rebounded the Wildcats 17-12, but committed 13 turnovers. Little had eight points and five rebounds on the half to lead Utah.
Utah used a 6-0 run to build its lead to 13 (35-22) in the second half, but the Wildcats later cut it to four with a 7-0 run of their own. The Utes then made six free throws down the stretch for the 13-point victory.
