NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 19/23 Utah women's basketball team lost by eight points - 73-65 - to No. 16/17 Oklahoma on the road this afternoon. With the loss, the Utes fall to 5-2 on the year. The Sooners improve to 6-0.
Both teams shot 47 percent from the field on the game, but Oklahoma hit 9-of-22 three-pointers, while Utah made just 2-of-14 (14 percent), a season low. The Sooners also out-rebounded Utah 36-30.
"I'm proud of our kids -- they came back strong in the second half," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "To their credit, Oklahoma stepped up and made shots, but we had some breakdowns defensively."
"We needed one more shot to drop in order to get it to a one-possession game," she continued. "The lesson learned here today is that our kids have to value every possession."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led Utah with 18 points. Senior Mandie Little added 16, while sophomore Shona Thorburn and senior Kelsy Stireman added 12 and 10, respectively. Senior Carley Marshall finished with nine points as all 65 of the Utes' points came from starters.
The first half was the story of runs as Oklahoma scored the first four points of the game, but the Utes came back and tied it at nine apiece. After ties at 11 and 13, the Sooners used an 8-0 run to go up 21-13. With Oklahoma up 24-17, Utah answered with a 9-0 run of its own to take its first lead of the game, 26-24 with 6:54 left in the half. However, the Sooners later scored nine straight to go ahead 36-28. By halftime, Oklahoma had extended its lead to 10, 43-33.
Though Utah shot 54 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 55 percent of the Sooners, the difference lay in rebounding and three-point shooting. Oklahoma grabbed 16 boards (including seven on the offensive end), while Utah had 11. The Sooners also drained 7-of-14 treys on the half. The Utes made 2-of-7 (29 percent) from downtown.
Oklahoma opened the second half with a quick three-pointer to go ahead by 13. Utah chipped away at the Sooner lead, cutting it to five with 3:53 left in the game, but that was as close as the Utes would get, as Oklahoma came right back down the court with a trey to extend its lead back to eight. Utah shot 41 percent from the field on the half, but was held scoreless from three-point range.
