PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's basketball team (15-3, 5-0) remained undefeated in conference play with a 67-50 win over Brigham Young in Provo this evening. Utah shot 50 percent from the field on the game, including a blazing 65 percent in the second half. In the meantime, Utah held the Cougars to 35 percent and out-rebounded BYU 33-28.
"I'm proud of our kids' play," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "BYU is so big and strong. I'm pleased that we didn't get hammered in the paint because they outsize us significantly."
Freshman Kim Smith led Utah with 19 points on 50 percent shooting, and 10 rebounds, for her third double-double of the season. Sophomore Lana Sitterud added 13 points, while Shona Thorburn also added a double-double - 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, with all 12 points coming in the second half. Junior Sarah Wobbe added season-highs eight points and two steals.
"Kim got all of BYU's attention," Elliott said. "You have to give her an incredible amount of credit, because she still found a way to produce against a great defensive effort."
"Lana and Sarah were really huge off the bench," Elliott added. "They were really the key, the 'x factor.'"
Utah started the game slow, making just one of its first five shots and after the Utes committed two turnovers in 55 seconds, BYU took a 10-4 lead. Utah then used a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game (11-10) at 11:42. Both teams scored a few free throws before the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. The Utes then held BYU scoreless for the last 4:26 of the half. During that same time, Utah scored eight points, including a pair of Carley Marshall free throws and a couple lay-ins, one by Smith and the other by Sitterud, to take a 22-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Utah connected on 8-of-23 shots on the half (35 percent), while BYU made 7-of-23 (30 percent). The Cougars pulled down 18 rebounds, compared to the Utes' 15, but Utah forced 11 BYU turnovers.
Utah started off the second half on a 5-1 run to take six-point lead, but BYU answered with a 10-5 run to cut it to one point (32-31) with 13:04 left in the half. Utah then pulled away, scoring 11 points compared to the Cougars' three. The Utes extended the lead to as many as 18, when Wobbe stole the ball, made an easy lay-in, was fouled and completed the three-point play. Utah outscored BYU 45-30 and out-rebounded them 18-10 on the half.
