SALT LAKE CITY - Canada Basketball today announced that University of Utah women's basketball players Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn are two of 12 athletes selected to the Senior Women's National Team, which will represent Canada at this year's Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 1-9.
The team was selected following the completion of the first training session at McMaster University, June 7-9. The team will meet again July 20-26, at Humber College in Toronto for the first part of their Phase II training session before departing for pre-competition training and exhibition games in Santo Domingo on July 27.
Senior Women's National Team Head Coach Allison McNeill, the associate head coach at the University of Oregon, selected the following 12 athletes to the Pan Am Games team:

"I am very pleased and excited about the intensity and quality of play I saw at our first training camp," McNeill said. "The players came in fit and eager to compete. The Pan Am Games will be a great test for us. We will play some tough competition which will give us a good indication of where the team is at and what we will need to improve on before heading to Mexico for the FIBA Americas and Pre-Olympic Qualification tournament."
Smith, the Mountain West Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year last season, led Utah in scoring, rebounding, field goals made, field goal percentage, three-point field goals made, three-point field goal percentage and free throws made. She was one of four freshmen nationally to be named a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) honorable mention All-American.
Smith, who reached double figures scoring in all but one game, was also named to the All-Newcomer Team by Full Court Press and was a WomensCollegeHoops.Com Freshman All-American.
Thorburn, a second-team all-MWC pick, led the Utes in assists, defensive rebounds and free throw percentage, and ranked second in scoring, steals, field goals made, three-point field goals made and free throws made.
