CULIACAN, Mexico - Team Canada kept its 2004 Olympic hopes alive with a 92-35 thrashing of the Dominican Republic today. With the win, the Canadians advance to the semifinals of the FIBA Americas and a possible Olympic berth.
Ute sophomores Shona Thorburn and Kim Smith finished with eight points apiece. Thorburn added three rebounds and two assists, while Smith grabbed five rebounds.
The Canadians out-rebounded the Dominicans, 52-14. Canada shot 55 percent (36-of-66) from the field compared to 21 percent (11-of-53) of the Dominican Republic.
Canada finished second in Pool B, behind Cuba, and will begin medal round play against Pool A champion Brazil at 6 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, Sept. 20.
In the second semifinal, Cuba will face the winner of tonight's round robin game between Mexico (0-1) and Chile (0-1).
Saturday's winners will meet for the gold medal, and a berth into the 2004 Summer Olympics, at 7 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Sept. 21. The bronze medal game will be played at 5 p.m. (EST).
