CULIACAN, Mexico - Utah sophomores Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn saw their 2004 Olympic hopes fade tonight as the Canadian Senior Women's National Team fell to Brazil 71-65 in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Smith continued to showcase her scoring touch, finishing with 11 points on the game.
Trailing 40-36 at the half, Canada continued to keep pace with the Brazilians and trailed by just seven points (53-46) entering the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Brazil began to pull away as Kelly Da Silva Santos' basket, 1:46 into the period, gave the 2003 Pan American Games bronze medalists their largest lead of the game at 58-48. Down by 10 points, the Canadians continued to attack the Brazilians, stepping up their defense and holding Brazil scoreless for more than five minutes. Having cut the lead to 58-54, the Canucks could not get any closer.
With the loss, Canada will meet Mexico in the bronze medal game at 7 p.m. (EST) tomorrow, Sept. 21. Cuba will tip-off against the Brazilians for the gold medal at 9 p.m. on Sunday with a ticket to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece on the line.
