The University of Utah women's basketball team officially gets preparations for the 2004-05 season started Saturday with the beginning of team practices.
After weeks of working out with the coaches in small groups, college basketball teams can convene as a group for full-scale practices beginning Saturday. Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott is looking forward to getting her squad together and getting started.
"I love the focus, energy and work ethic exhibited in our preseason workouts," said Elliott, who is beginning her 22nd season at the helm of the Ute program. "We have great leadership. I believe this team will respond to the season's challenges."
Fans wanting to get a glimpse of the Utah women will get a chance at "Night With the Utes." For the first time, the Utah women will be a part of this event, scheduled for Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The event is free to the public and will give Utah a sneak-peek of the men's and women's teams for 2004-05. The Ute men tip-off the night's festivities with a 20-minute scrimmage. Both teams will then compete in a 3-point shootout, followed by a celebrity 2-ball contest featuring members of the Salt Lake sports media.
After the contests, men's head coach Ray Giacoletti and Elliott will preview their upcoming seasons. Players and coaches will be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Matt Thomas, the new "Voice of the Utes" on Hot Ticket 700, will emcee the event.
The Utah women will play a pair of exhibition contests to get the season started. The first of which will be against Baden Sports on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. The Utes will wrap up the exhibition season Nov. 13, hosting a group of National Women's Basketball League all-stars at 3 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
