HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Three Utah players scored in double figures Sunday afternoon as the Ute women's basketball team upended Idaho 57-50 in the fifth-place game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. Shona Thorburn and Kim Smith each turned in double-double performances in the victory.
Thorburn led the Utah scoring effort with 14 points, while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Smith scored 11 and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Meanwhile, Julie Wood started for the second consecutive game and responded with an 11-point output.
Wood scored the first eight points of the contest for Utah, staking the Utes to an 8-3 advantage through the first 2:36. Utah led by just two, 17-15 after a Leilani Mitchell three-pointer for Idaho at the 8:45 mark. But the Utes got a trey from Lana Sitterud to spark a 9-3 spurt. That burst put Utah on top by eight, 26-18 with 5:23 until halftime. Idaho pulled back within four at halftime, 28-24.
Mitchell scored early in the second half to pull Idaho within two, 28-26. But Utah rattled off a 12-2 run to take a 12-point lead, 40-28, with 14:11 left in the game. Thorburn and Smith each scored four points during that run. Mitchell, who hit four three-pointers in the contest, connected on two of them within a span of 42 seconds, to trim Idaho's deficit to eight.
Emily Faurholt followed with another trey for the Vandals and the Utah lead was cut to five. A Heather Thoelke layup and two Mitchell free throws pulled Idaho within one at the 9:59 mark, 42-41. The Mitchell three-pointers sparked a 13-2 spurt for the Vandals.
One minute later, Thorburn knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to give Utah a little breathing room, 47-43. Utah maintained the four-point advantage at the 1:35 mark, 52-48. Thorburn found her way down the lane with just less than one minute left for a layup to put the Utes up six. After a Faurholt score to trim the Utah lead back to four, Wood hit a pair of free throws to ice the victory.
Utah struggled from the field once again. But the Utes held Idaho to just 35.2 percent field-goal shooting and got another strong rebounding effort. Utah out-rebounded the Vandals 42-31, including 12 offensive boards.
Mitchell paced Idaho with 19 points, while Faurholt tacked on 16.
Utah is in action again Thursday, hosting Utah Valley State at the Huntsman Center in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
