SALT LAKE CITY -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association released its preseason strength of schedule rankings recently. A quick study of the rankings shows the University of Utah women's basketball team will face the toughest schedule of any Mountain West Conference team in 2004-05.
According to the rankings compiled by Richie Summerville for the WBCA, Utah's schedule ranks as the 55th toughest in the nation. Utah's non-conference slate -- which includes nationally-ranked teams Stanford, Oklahoma and Michigan State -- comes in as the 13th-most difficult in the country.
"Quite honestly, I think our schedule strength will increase as the season progresses," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "The biggest change will come because our league will be stronger than last year, so the difference between that preseason number and the overall number will decrease. I've said all along our schedule is brutal. Depending on what happens in the Hawaii tournament, we could see 3 top 20 teams in our first five games, then come home to face two more before Christmas. Add the pre-season first- and third-place picks in the West Coast league on the road, and who knows what fireworks are ahead."
The following is a look at the Mountain West Conference and each team's strength of schedule rankings (overall/non-conference): Utah (55th/13th); Wyoming (81st/120th); Colorado State (89th/87th); BYU (114th/161st); Air Force (120th/288th); New Mexico (160th/197th); UNLV (166th/185th); San Diego State (201st/319th).
As a conference, the Mountain West ranks 14th in schedule strength among the 31 NCAA Division I leagues.
Utah plays an exhibition game Saturday against a squad of players from the National Women's Basketball League. Tipoff for Saturday's contest is slated for 3 p.m.
The Utes, who are just two spots out of the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Preseason Top 25, open the regular season with No. 7 Stanford on Nov. 19 at the Huntsman Center. Tipoff for the Stanford game, which is the first half of a doubleheader with the Utah men, will be at 6 p.m.
