The Utes are at home again Saturday afternoon, hosting the University of Washington Huskies. Washington, out of the Pac-10 Conference, sports a 3-2 record coming into the game, including an overtime victory over nationally-ranked Minnesota. Tipoff for Saturday's game against Washington is slated for 3 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.
Utah Head Coach Elaine Elliott
University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Ute program.
Elliott has a career record of 440-180. She is the winningest coach in Utah basketball history. Elliott has led the Utah women to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight regular-season conference titles, three divisional crowns and five conference tournament championships. Elliott has been regarded for years as one of the best women's basketball coaches in the country. She has the longest tenure of any coach in the Mountain West Conference.
In 21 years, Elliott has had an astounding 20 winning seasons. She has been named her conference's coach of the year eight different times. Elliott has coached 28 first-team all-conference players and six players of the year.
Elliott was named the John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year following the 2000-01 season.
Utah Valley State Head Coach Cathy Nixon
Cathy Nixon enters her 10th season at the helm of the Wolverine women's basketball program. She also served four years as an assistant to long-time coach Tom Perkins before taking over the program. In the first year of NCAA Division I competition in 2003-04, Nixon led the Wolverines to a respectable 11-13 record.
In her inaugural year (1995-96), Nixon guided UVSC to its best finish ever in NJCAA. The squad went on to take fourth in the country at the NJCAA National Championships. The Wolverines finished 29-6 that year. Nixon also has a Region 18 Coach of The Year to her credit (1996).
Before coming to UVSC, Nixon served as an assistant coach at Brigham Young University.
Utah Update
Utah held Idaho to just 35.2 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Vandals 42-31 in Sunday's game at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. The Utes' efforts on defense and the boards overcame their low shooting percentage (.368) in a 57-50 victory.
The Utes opened the Rainbow Wahine Classic with a 56-54 loss to then-No. 14 Michigan State. Utah tied the game with a Marie Warner three-pointer with eight seconds remaining. But Michigan State's Kristin Haynie took the inbounds pass, went the length of the floor and hit a layup with two seconds on the clock to give her team the win.
The Utes came back with a 52-45 victory over Hawaii in the second round of the tournament. Utah out-rebounded Hawaii 46-36 in the victory.
Kim Smith recorded double-doubles in all three games in the tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. It was her fourth consecutive double-double this season.
Scouting the Wolverines
Utah Valley State is 1-5 after Tuesday night's 74-65 loss against Montana State.
Three-pointers by Rebekah Fales and Jasmine Fantl gave Utah Valley a 48-46 lead with 10:11 left in the game. But Montana State regained the lead at 59-53 with 3:57 remaining in the game. The closest Utah Valley got the rest of the way was 59-56 with 3:40 left in the game. UVSC had three scorers in double-figures, led by Kaydee Allred's 15.
The Wolverines opened the season with four straight losses, falling to Idaho, Gonzaga, Utah State and Alaska-Fairbanks. UVSC got its first win in the consolation round of the North Star Invitational in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Wolverines outscored Jacksonville State 40-15 in the second half to take a 67-43 victory.
Utah Valley State is paced by junior forward Miriam Palkki, who scores 11.2 points per game and is averaging 6.8 rebounds per contest.
