SALT LAKE CITY -- The No. 25 University of Utah women's basketball team suffered its worst home loss in nearly 10 years Tuesday night at the Huntsman Center. Oklahoma (7-3) took advantage of poor Utah shooting at the beginning of each half to take a 72-59 victory.
The 13-point defeat was the worst in the Huntsman Center since Jan. 12, 1995. That night, San Diego State took a 70-55 win over the Utes.
Utah (8-3) started the first half 1-for-11 from the field. Oklahoma took advantage of the Utes' cold start and built a 15-4 advantage. The Sooners led 18-6 with 12:25 left in the half after a Laura Andrews three-pointer.
Utah finally found some offense over the course of the next three minutes. Kim Smith scored four points and Julie Wood hit a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 outburst for the Utes. With 9:09 remaining in the first half, Utah was back within two, 18-16. Utah had two chances to tie the game or take the lead over the next three minutes, but couldn't find the basket.
Leading 21-19, Oklahoma ripped off a 12-1 run in a span of four minutes. That quickly, the Sooners were up by 13 points, 33-20. The Utes outscored the Sooners 9-2 over the final 2:21 of the half and clawed back into the contest, trailing 35-29 at the intermission. But that's as close as Utah would get.
The Utes opened the second half with an 0-for-7 shooting drought. Oklahoma started the second stanza with one of Erin Higgins' four second-half three-pointers. She hit five treys in the game. The Higgins three started a 9-0 spurt for the Sooners over the first three minutes of the second half. That run put Oklahoma on top 44-29 and Utah never recovered.
Oklahoma's lead expanded to as many as 17 points on five occasions throughout the second half as the Sooners cruised to the 13-point victory.
Oklahoma outscored the Utes 28-18 in the paint and held a 45-31 advantage on the boards. The Sooners shot 43.9 percent from the field, compared to just 32.1 percent for Utah. Oklahoma was paced by Higgins' 17 point-effort. Dionnah Jackson tallied a double-double for the Sooners with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Utes were led by Smith, who tallied a game-high 19 points and pulled down nine boards.
Utah is now off until Dec. 27, when they will begin preparations for a Dec. 30 game at Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. Tipoff against Gonzaga is slated for 7 p.m. PST.
