SALT LAKE CITY - Five Utes reached double figures scoring as the Utah women's basketball team won its 25th straight game at home and remained undefeated in the Mountain West Conference with a 71-57 win over Colorado State in the Huntsman Center this evening. With the win, Utah improves to 18-4 overall and 8-0 in the MWC.
Utah shot 44 percent from the field on the game and 42 percent from downtown, while the Rams shot 42 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range. For just the third time this season, the Utes won a game in which they were out-rebounded, as CSU grabbed 36 boards to Utah's 35. The Utes committed nine turnovers on the game and forced 16 by the Rams.
"We've only had a couple teams this season that have played as well against us as CSU did in the first half," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "It was a good test for our kids to see how they would respond."
"We have kids that can support us on any given night," she continued. "We had good balance tonight. Anytime you have five kids in double figures, that's a good thing."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led Utah with game highs of 17 points and eight rebounds. She also had a blocked shot and a steal. Junior Lana Sitterud added 15 points, all from three-pointers, thus setting a career high with five treys. Rounding out the group of double-figure scorers were senior Mandie Little, sophomore Shona Thorburn and senior Carley Marshall with 12, 11 and 10, respectively. Little also pulled down five boards, while Marshall dished out six assists. Senior point guard Kelsy Stireman finished with a game-high seven assists to go along with six points, five rebounds and two steals.
After a close start, the Rams used a 16-4 run to take an eight-point lead (20-12) midway through the first half. Utah answered with a 5-0 run, but CSU came right back with seven straight to go up by 10 (27-17). The Utes then went on a 17-5 run, capped by a Smith trey as time expired, to head into the locker room up by two, 34-32.
Utah shot 39 percent from the field and 46 percent from downtown on the half, while CSU connected on 13-of-27 (48 percent) from the field and 5-of-8 (63 percent) from three-point range. The Rams out-rebounded Utah 19 to 17. The Utes committed five turnovers and forced nine by CSU.
Utah opened the second half on a 17-6 run, jumping ahead 51-38, and never looked back. Carrying over from the first half, the Rams at one point made just 2-of-15 shots. After having been down by 10 in the first half, the Utes led by as many as 21 in the second.
Utah shot 50 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 35 percent of the Rams. The Utes also out-rebounded CSU 18-17.
