Utah Women Win Ninth Straight, 59-45 Over Wyoming

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Mountain West Conference play and won its 26th consecutive home game with a 59-45 win over former associate head coach Joe Legerski's Wyoming Cowgirls in the Huntsman Center this afternoon. With the victory, the Utes improve to 19-4 overall and 9-0 in MWC play.
Utah shot 48 percent from the field and 58 percent from three-point range on the game. For the second game in a row, the Utes were out-rebounded by an opponent, this time 26 to 22. Utah had a season-high four blocked shots and forced 19 Cowgirl turnovers while committing 12.
"It's a good win," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "I have high expectations, but I do realize that it's a long season and the kids have played hard all year."
"Joe has done great things with them," she continued. "That team is so much improved from the beginning of the season."
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith led the Utes with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Sophomore Shona Thorburn added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, while junior Lana Sitterud finished with 11 points, all scored in the first half. Senior Kelsy Stireman finished with eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
In the first half, Utah quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead (11-4) on a Sitterud trey, but Wyoming battled back, taking the lead (24-23) at the 3:59 mark. The Utes answered with a 10-0 run and went into the locker room up by seven at halftime.
Utah shot 50 percent from the field and 63 percent from downtown on the half, compared to the 56 and 50 percent, respectively, of the Cowgirls. Wyoming out-rebounded the Utes 12 to 9, but Utah forced 11 Cowgirl turnovers and committed just four. Sitterud led the Utes with 11 points on 80 percent (4-of-5) shooting.
The Utes opened the second half on a 14-2 run, building its lead to 18 (47-28), and never looked back. Utah, which led by as many as 22, shot 44 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 33 percent of Wyoming. The Cowgirls edged the Utes 14 to 13 on the boards.

Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a 7 p.m. game at New Mexico next Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Pit. The game will be televised live on College Sports Television (CSTV).
