SALT LAKE CITY - Kim Smith, sophomore forward on the Utah women's basketball team, has been named to the five-member Academic All-District VIII Team. Smith garnered first-team honors with a 3.476 GPA as a communications major. As a first-team selection, Smith now advances to the national ballot, the results of which will be announced on Thursday, March 4. Meanwhile, seniors Kelsy Stireman and Mandie Little made the seven-member second team.
In order to be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must be a starter or important reserve and must be in at least their second season of competition at their current school.
The teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VIII is comprised of the states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Smith, the MWC Preseason Player of the Year, was one of 35 candidates and just three sophomores for the Wade Trophy, given to nation's best player. She currently leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and ranks second in field goal percentage. In MWC statistics, Smith ranks second in scoring, third in defensive rebounds and three-point field goal percentage, fourth in three-point field goal average and field goal percentage, fifth in rebounding, seventh in offensive rebounds and ninth in free throw percentage. She has five double-doubles on the season and is on pace to reach 1,000 career points this season, making her just the second Ute sophomore ever to achieve that feat.
In 2002-03, Smith was one of four freshmen Kodak honorable mention All-Americans and was named the MWC Player and Newcomer of Year, the first time the same player has received both awards in the history of the conference. She was named to two freshman All-America teams after leading Utah in seven statistical categories. Smith also set the MWC and Utah freshman scoring records with 540 points and tied with Diana Taurasi for 2003 NCAA Tournament single game scoring record (35).
Stireman, a nursing major with a 3.574 GPA, is a co-captain and four-year starter at point guard. She leads the team in steals and field goal percentage, and ranks second in assists. In the MWC, she ranks third in steals, fourth in assist/turnover ratio and seventh in assists. She nabbed a career-high seven steals vs. Weber State on Dec. 20.
Last season, Stireman led the team in steals and ranked second in assists and field goal percentage. She has started 111 of 113 games on her career.
Little carries a 3.661 GPA as a special education major. She ranks second on the team in offensive rebounds, third in both rebounding and field goal percentage, and fourth in scoring. She currently ranks sixth in the MWC in field goal percentage.
In 2002-03, Little played in all 31 games, starting the last 20. She led the team in offensive rebounds and ranked third in rebounding and blocked shots. She recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds against Air Force in the first round of the 2003 MWC Tournament.
A transfer from Ricks Junior College, Little was named first-team all-conference in '01 after averaging 15.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. She was also the 2000 Region 18 MVP.
