SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team had its season come to an abrupt end yesterday when it failed to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament, despite posting a 24-7 record, sharing the regular-season Mountain West Conference title and advancing in the championship game of the MWC Tournament.
Utah was ranked in the Top 25 for seven weeks during the season and had an RPI of 40. The Utes went 12-2 in conference play, and 12-5 against non-conference foes. Its non-conference schedule included close losses on the road to NCAA Tournament participants UC Santa Barbara, Montana and Oklahoma.
Sophomore Kim Smith was named MWC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and three other Utes - sophomore Shona Thorburn (second team), and seniors Kelsy Stireman (third team) and Carley Marshall (honorable mention) were also named to the all-conference team.
"I don't really know what more you can do," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "I think we're competitive, so it's extremely disappointing."
The Utes turned down an invitation to play in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
