TORONTO - Canadian Senior Women's National Team Head Coach Allison McNeill today announced the 17-woman roster that will compete in a four-city exhibition tour vs. the Japanese Women's Olympic Team in British Columbia June 4-8, and Utah's Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn have once again made the team.
Of the 17 players announced to the roster, 14 have previously played at the National Team level with seven of those members coming from last year's Senior Women's National Team (Claudia Brassard, Carolyn Ganes, Isabelle Grenier, Nikki Johnson, Teresa Kleindienst, Smith and Thorburn).
The Senior Women's National Team training camp will be held at Trinity Western University from May 19-June 3. Following the camp, the squad will take part in the four-city exhibition tour.
"Since we did not qualify for the 2004 Olympics, this training camp will bring together some of our veteran and development athletes," McNeill said. "Our intent is to train for three weeks and get a feel for a group of athletes that will make up the team that will go to the 2005 FIBA Americas World Championship Qualification Tournament with an eye on the World Championships in 2006 and the Olympics in 2008. In the short term, we're very much looking forward to the exhibition tour versus Olympic-bound Japan, as it will provide our team with an excellent initial test against a world-class opponent."
