TORONTO - Canada Basketball today announced the 14 athletes who have received invitations to attend this spring's Senior Women's National Team training camp, and Utah's Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn are on the list.
Of the 14 training camp invitees, seven were members of last year's Senior Women's National Team, while six were part of last summer's Development Women's National Team. The competition schedule for the team will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Senior Women's National Team training camp will take place from May 20-June 9 at Trinity Western University and will include the 14 pre-selected athletes as well as any players selected through "tryout by invitation" camp featuring selected athletes from the Eastern and Western Canada open tryouts.
For the third consecutive year, University of Oregon associate coach Allison McNeill will assume the head coaching duties for Team Canada. Last year, McNeill guided Canada to a bronze medal finish at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament and a fourth place result at the Pan American Games.
"I'm extremely honored to return as the head coach of the Senior Women's National Team," McNeill said. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity of coaching a competitive, energetic team that will feature a nice mix of up-and-coming players and current veterans. With the start of this training camp, we will officially begin the process of working towards our goal of securing one of the five available berths at the 2005 FIBA Americas World Championships Qualification Tournament."
Joining McNeill behind the bench as assistant coaches are University of Oregon assistant coach Mike McNeill and University of Saskatchewan head coach Lisa Thomaidis.
The Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row, Smith was a Kodak honorable mention All-American for the second consecutive season. She was one of 35 candidates (only three sophomores) for the Wade Trophy, given to the nation's best player. She led Utah in scoring, rebounding, field goals made, field goal percentage, three-point field goals made and free throws made, and had eight double-doubles on the season. Smith currently has 1,020 points on her career, making her just the second sophomore and the 18th Utah player ever to score 1,000 or more points.
Thorburn was a second-team All-MWC pick for the second year in a row after leading the team in assists and blocks, and ranking second in scoring and rebounding, and third in three-point field goal percentage and steals. Thorburn, who reached double-digit scoring 20 times, was named to the all-tournament team at the MWC Tournament.
