SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah women's basketball player Kim Smith has been named to the Women's Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team. Smith is one of 30 student-athletes to be recognized by the John R. Wooden Award National Advisory Board.
Smith and the 29 other players on the Wooden Preseason All-America Team were selected based on last year's individual performance and team records. They are the early frontrunners for one of college basketball's highest individual honors, the John R. Wooden Award. These 30 candidates are comprised of returning players, although transfers, freshmen and others will be evaluated and considered for the Midseason Top 20 list and the national ballot for the Wooden Award.
"The Committee had an incredibly difficult task in narrowing down the nation's top 30 women's players," said Mike Solum, Director of the Wooden Award. "In fact, 67 players received at least one vote, which truly illustrates the parity of women's college basketball today. This list represents the elite of college basketball. Our entire team at the Wooden Award is excited to see the best players in the nation prove their case as basketball's player of the year."
Smith, who is the two-time defending Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, helped lead the Utes to a 24-7 record and a share of the MWC regular season championship. The 6-foot, 1-inch forward averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season.
The Wooden Award was created in 1976. Last year, Duke's Alana Beard was the inaugural women's winner of the Wooden Award. In mid-January, the Wooden Award Committee will release the Midseason Top 20 List, followed by the official voting ballot in March. The 2005 Award Ceremony will be held at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 9, 2005 and will be broadcast live on CBS.
