SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah women's basketball player Kim Smith has been named to the preseason list for the State Farm Wade Trophy. The announcement marked the second consecutive season that Smith has been recognized by the Wade Trophy national awards committee. Smith is the two-time defending Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. She averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds last season, leading Utah to a share of the MWC regular-season championship and a 24-7 record. Smith is also a two-time Kodak/WBCA Honorable Mention All-America performer. Smith is one of 31 NCAA Division I women's basketball players named to the Wade Trophy preseason list. The Wade Trophy national awards committee is comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators. Student-athletes are selected to the list based on game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. "The 2004-05 State Farm Wade Trophy preseason list is an example of how dynamic and exciting the game of women's college basketball has become," said Jeanne Lenti-Ponsetto, Chair of the State Farm Wade Trophy Committee and Athletic Director at DePaul University. "These 31 student-athletes represent the best and brightest and we look forward to an outstanding year of college women's basketball." The State Farm Wade Trophy is now in its 28th year and is named after the late Lily Margaret Wade, who led Delta State to three national championships. The award debuted in 1978 and was the first-ever women's college basketball player of the year award. Smith's inclusion on the Wade Trophy watch list follows an earlier announcement naming her as a Women's Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team member. The 2005 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced during the Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind. April 2-5. -UU-
