Utah-New Mexico Fast Breaks
> This is the 53rd meeting between Utah and New Mexico on the women's basketball hardwood.
> Utah leads the series 39-13.
> New Mexico took two of the three meetings between the squads last season. Utah won the Salt Lake City meeting, 52-43. New Mexico took a 49-46 win in Albuquerque. The Lobos also took a 71-50 victory in the Mountain West Tournament championship game.
> Utah dropped each of the past two meetings at The Pit by just three points. In each contest, the Utes had an opportunity to force overtime, but missed on three-point attempts.
> The last six meetings have been split between the two squads, 3-3.
> Utah won the first nine meetings with New Mexico and also won 10 in a row from 1992-96.
Utah Update
University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Ute program.
Elliott has a career record of 451-182. She is the winningest coach in Utah basketball history. Elliott has led the Utah women to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight regular-season conference titles, three divisional crowns and five conference tournament championships. Elliott has been regarded for years as one of the best women's basketball coaches in the country. She has the longest tenure of any coach in the Mountain West Conference.
In 21 years, Elliott has had an astounding 20 winning seasons. She has been named her conference's coach of the year eight different times. Elliott has coached 28 first-team all-conference players and six Players of the Year.
Elliott was named the John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year following the 2000-01 season.
Utah Update
Utah went on the road for the first time in 2005 and came away with one its largest margins of victory ever Thursday. The Utes grounded the Air Force Falcons, 97-47, at Clune Arena in Colorado Springs.
The 97 points were the most Utah has ever scored in a Mountain West Conference game. It was the most points scored by a Ute squad since a 106-99 loss to BYU on Feb. 8, 1986.
Utah opened the game with a 13-2 run, keyed by nine points from Kim Smith. The Utes never looked back. Later, Shona Thorburn scored eight points in a 19-3 spurt, which gave Utah a 33-10 advantage.
The Utes led by 24 points, 43-19, at halftime.
The second half was owned by Utah center Deanne Hanchett. The 6-foot 3-inch freshman scored 19 of her game- and career-high 27 points in the second period, en route to the 50-point victory.
Smith tallied her eighth double-double of the season and 19th of her career, tallying 18 points and 11 boards. Thorburn went for a double-double also, with 13 points and 11 assists.
New Mexico Head Coach Don Flanagan
Don Flanagan is in his 10th season as the head coach of the New Mexico Lobos. He has record of 204-92 at New Mexico.
Flanagan was hired as the fourth head coach in the history of the women's basketball program at the University of New Mexico on April 16, 1995. Before coming to the Lobos, Flanagan left his mark firmly engraved in the annals of New Mexico high school girl's basketball.
Flanagan posted a win-loss record at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque that will never be duplicated in New Mexico. His incredible 401-13 career record in 16 years was good for a winning percentage of 97.0 percent.
Flanagan's accomplishments included 14 different tournament championships, 15 district championships, winning streaks of 77, 74, 69, 66 and 60 games, respectively, and his teams averaged 25 wins a year for 16 years. During those 16 years, Flanagan's teams went undefeated nine times.
Scouting New Mexico
This season, New Mexico is 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos are on a three-game winning streak and have defeated Air Force and BYU to open conference play.
New Mexico's two losses on the season came at Minnesota (75-35) and at home against Texas (73-56).
Lindsey Arndt leads the Lobos, averaging 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
