Utah Update
Utah wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule against Northern Colorado. The Utes are in the midst of a five-game homestand. They have won the first two of those contests, over IPFW (62-42) and Montana (68-42).
Against Montana, Utah shot lights out from behind the three-point arc and used pressure defense to hold the Lady Griz to well below their scoring average.
The Utes hit 12-of-23 three-pointers against Montana, the preseason favorites in the Big Sky Conference. Utah also forced the Lady Griz into 24 turnovers. The Utes held a 26-7 advantage in points scored off turnovers.
Kim Smith moved into the No. 10 spot on the all-time Utah scoring chart in the game. She led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and nine boards. Two other Utes were in double figures, as Shona Thorburn tallied 15 and Lana Sitterud tacked on 14. Smith, Thorburn and Sitterud hit 10 of Utah's 12 treys.
Scouting Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado is 3-11 and enters the game with Utah on a two-game losing streak. The Bears dropped a 69-59 decision to Colorado State on Jan. 2 and lost 83-52 at Weber State on Thursday. UNC holds victories over Utah State, UTEP and IPFW.
In Thursday's game against Weber State, UNC saw the Wildcats put together a 33-2 run in the second half. Weber hit 13 three-pointers, while Northern Colorado was successful from downtown nine times.
The Bears are paced by Kendra Lambrecht, who scores 8.1 points per game. Five UNC players tally more than 6.5 points per game.
Northern Colorado lives and dies by the three-pointer. The Bears have shot 443 treys this season, hitting 125 for a .282 percentage. By comparison, Utah has attempted just 272 three-pointers this season.
Homestanding Utes
The upcoming matchup with Northern Colorado is the middle game of a five-game homestand for Utah. The homestand stretches over a span of 15 days.
The Utes opened the stretch of home games Jan. 1 with IPFW and finish up the non-conference slate with the Bears on Saturday. Utah then opens Mountain West Conference play against Colorado State and Wyoming on Jan. 13 and 15.
The last time Utah had a homestand this long was a seven-game stretch in 2000-01.
Women of Steal
Utah racked up a season-high 16 steals against Montana Tuesday night. Lana Sitterud and Kim Smith each tallied career-high steal totals, nabbing six and five, respectively.
In fact, Utah has picked up the defensive pressure a great deal as of late. The Utes have double-figure steals in five of the last six games. In the eight games prior, they only reached 10 steals once.
Through the season's first eight games, Utah averaged 5.4 takeaways. Over the last six, steals have ballooned to 11.3 per contest.
Smith Smashes Into Top 10
Junior forward Kim Smith took over the No. 10 spot on the Utah all-time scoring chart against Montana in the Utes' last outing.
Smith hit two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the contest to pass Mo Eckroth for the No. 10 spot on the scoring chart. She finished with 17 points in the contest, giving her 1,260 points for her career.
Next up in Smith's sights will be Sandy Kovach's total of 1,296 points, recorded from 1979-83. At her current pace, Smith should move into the No. 9 spot in two games.
Thorburn Nears 1,000
Junior guard Shona Thorburn is approaching a scoring milestone, while continuing to climb the Utah all-time assists chart.
Thorburn needs just 12 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau and become just the 19th player in Utah history to reach that mark. She is averaging 11.6 points per game and could join the 1,000-point club as early as Saturday's game against Northern Colorado.
Thorburn continues to dish out helpers at a stellar pace as well. She has 318 career assists and needs 61 more to move into the No. 6 spot.
Thorburn is averaging 6.6 assists per game, which would put her third on the single-season assist charts if the season ended today.
