SALT LAKE CITY -- Fans got their first glimpse of the 2005-06 version of the University of Utah women's basketball team Thursday during Night With the Utes at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The women's squad held a scrimmage and took part in three-point and hot-shot contests with the men's team.
The Red team, paced by last year's co-Mountain West Conference Players of the Year, took the women's scrimmage by a score of 16-7.
Kim Smith scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting for the Red squad in the 10-minute scrimmage, and also pulled down five rebounds. Meanwhile, fellow senior Shona Thorburn dished out four assists and grabbed four steals for the Red. The Red team shot a blistering 70 percent from the field, including 2-of-5 from three-point range. Heidi Carlsen tacked on three points for the Red, while Lydia Whitehead and Brittany Berg each tallied a bucket.
The White team was paced by Jessica Perry, who scored five points on a 2-of-3 performance from the floor. The only other White team member to light the scoreboard was Camie Oakey, who hit a pair of free throws.
The women's squad won the second annual three-point challenge between the men's and women's teams by a tally of 42-31. The women's trio of Carlsen, Smith and Thorburn tallied 42 made three-pointers, led by Carlsen's 16-of-25 performance. The men's squad was paced by Johnny Bryant, who connected on 14 of his attempts.
In the hot-shot competition, the team of Marie Warner and Ricky Johns took the title in a tie-breaker. Warner and Johns scored 56 points, as did Casey Iverson and Julie Larsen. The tie-breaker saw the top scorer from each of those two teams take the floor for one more 60-second hot-shot contest. Warner tallied 35 points for her squad, while Iverson could manage just 24, giving Warner and Johns the championship.
