SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah senior Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) scored 21 points Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Smith's effort paced the Utes to an 83-46 victory over Jacksonville (Ala.) State in Utah's season-opener.
With the Utes holding a 12-7 lead seven minutes into the contest, junior Heidi Carlsen (St. George, Utah) hit back-to-back three-pointers. Those two treys sparked a 16-0 Utah run. When senior Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ont.) hit a three-pointer to cap the run with 8:09 remaining in the half, Utah held a 28-7 advantage.
Jacksonville State didn't reach double figures until the 6:12 mark of the first half. The Gamecocks' Courtney Slaughter hit a three-pointer to make it 28-10. Freshman Joh-Teena Filipe (Salt Lake City) answered with a three-pointer for Utah, helping push the Utes to a 22-point lead at halftime, 39-17.
Jacksonville State outscored Utah over the first six minutes of the second half. The Gamecocks pulled within 16 points, 50-34, when LaTonya McKinney converted a traditional three-point play. But Utah didn't allow JSU any closer. Carlsen and sophomore Marie Warner (Hamilton, Ont.) both hit three-pointers during a 14-0 Utah run. Warner's trey capped the spurt and gave Utah a 30-point advantage, 64-34, with nine minutes to play.
Utah then cruised the 37-point victory. Smith's game-high 21 points paced four Utes in double figures. Carlsen and Filipe each tallied 11 off the bench, while Thorburn tacked on 10 and also dished out eight assists.
Rebecca Haynes was the only Jacksonville State player to reach double figures, leading her team with 15 points.
Utah now heads on the road for a pair of Pac-10 road games. The Utes travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies Wednesday. They will then travel to Tucson, Ariz. for a Saturday matchup with the Arizona Wildcats.
