SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah junior forward Kim Smith has been recognized by the Women's Wooden Award as one of its Top Performers for the weeks of Jan. 31-Feb. 13. Smith's accomplishments were noted, along with four other players from around the nation, in the Women's Wooden Watch, the official newsletter of the John R. Wooden Award women's category.
Utah is currently in second place in the Mountain West Conference standings after putting together a 3-1 stretch from Jan. 31-Feb. 13, thanks in part to Smith's play.
The Mission, B.C., Canada native recorded 16 points and seven rebounds in a 63-55 victory over UNLV. She followed that up with a stellar performance against San Diego State, when she put up game-high totals of 18 points and 12 boards in the win over the Aztecs.
Smith also came up big again in the clutch during the Utes' double-overtime victory against Wyoming. She forced the first overtime with a last-second basket and then scored the go-ahead bucket in the second overtime. Smith finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds against the Cowgirls. She finished the four-game run with 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds in a loss to New Mexico.
Smith has led Utah in scoring or rebounding in 18 of the team's 24 games. She has recorded 11 double-doubles this season, most in the Mountain West Conference. Smith is currently the top rebounder (9.6 rpg) and second-leading scorer (17.2 ppg) in the conference.
Utah is in action again Saturday afternoon, when the Utes host Air Force in a 3 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center.
